Amed Rosario hopes to steal some knowledge from Jose Reyes on being more aggressive on the bases | Newsday

Yes, please.

This year, Rosario said his plan is to be “100 percent” aggressive on the bases.

“If God provides me with health, I’ll be able to steal a lot of bases,” he said through an interpreter.

Count manager Mickey Callaway among the believers in that possibility. But base-stealing is a skill that takes time to develop, just like hitting and fielding.

“Base-stealing is something that is an art and it takes time to build, unless you’re just clearly outrunning the baseball,” Callaway said. “Baserunning takes great leads, a lot of instinct, a lot of research on what the pitcher’s doing and what he’s not doing.

“He can be a huge threat. He’s obviously one of the faster guys, footspeed-wise, in the big leagues. So if he can really hone in on his skills to really steal bases and get better and better at it, he can be a perennial base-stealer if he wants.”

Said Rosario of Callaway’s vote of confidence: “It’s very important to me. That encourages me to go and steal a lot of bases.”

Can't steal first base, Amed. Lay off some pitches, learn the strike zone, and get that OBP North of .300.

I think he started strong and thought he was where he needed to be already. Hopefully he will adjust.

Has the language officially given up on this one too?

He has quick wrists, and a really strong swing. But ####### he's swinging at *everything*. I came around to the idea of bringing him up last year--and I know keeping him down while Reyes tried to play SS looked like another example of the #lolMets...but we might have to concede that they were right to insist on keeping him at AAA until he learned better pitch recognition. Of course, Vegas is/was part of the problem, as it rewards high-contact hitters. If Rosario were playing at Syracuse last year, hitting an empty .260, it would have been easier to make the case that he had problems to fix.

FTR, Statcast did clock him with the 5th best (tied) sprint speed last year, just 0.6 off the leaders Buxton and Hamilton. If that's what you want, Dee Gordon is probably your man as he's near the top in sprint speed and has a history of getting on base at a decent clip. Or Trea Turner who's not quite as fast (11th last year) but has a genuinely good OBP and some pop. I should probably pay more attention to Trea Turner (worst decision in Rays history? ... almost certainly one of the worst in Padres history)

The Rays took Bobby Abreu from the Astros in the expansion draft. And then immediately traded him to the Phillies for Kevin Stocker. Turner has a good shot to better than Abreu, but only time will tell.

Abreu had a 60-WAR career. Turner's chances of being better are slim.
