Andrus, Rangers agree to 3-year, $14.5 million extension

A source confirmed that the Rangers and shortstop Elvis Andrus have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year contract extension worth approximately $14.5 million. The deal is pending Andrus passing a physical.

The deal wipes out all three of Andrus’ arbitration years but does not include any option years that could prevent him from becoming a free agent before 2015.

Count me as among those who does not get this signing at all from Texas's perspective.

They're on the hook for his salary if he starts to suck--a pretty high risk for a guy who can't hit--and receive no benefit in return.

His biggest assets are defense and OBP, and neither skill is rewarded in arbitration. What's the risk in taking him year to year?

If I'm the Ragners, I would not mind not having to haggle over arbitration figures with Scott Boras every winter for three years.

They get protection against an insane arb award, and will probably have Profar ready to take over at short when the deal's up.

Not how I would've done it, but not crazy, either.

Or, you know, Andrus breaks through. His BA and doubles spiked this season, and he's still very young. It's completely within the realm of possibility that Andrus submits a 300/365/410 season in the next two seasons, and then this looks like a bargain.
