Angels Acquire Gordon Beckham

Can he pitch?

The Angels announced that they have acquired second baseman Gordon Beckham from the White Sox in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

Beckham, 27, has struggled this season with the White Sox, hitting just .221/.263/.336 in 390 plate appearances.. he is a lifetime .244/.306/.374 batter…

Beckham will bring some degree defensive versatility to the Angels, and Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register tweets that he will come off the bench… Defensive metrics such as Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved have pegged Beckham’s glove as roughly average over the past four seasons.

After Konerko is finally euthanized, Tyler Flowers will be the third-longest tenured White Sock.

The Angels have acquired a guy with a -.5 fWAR in hopes of bolstering their playoff and title hopes. They have paid Chicago for the privilege in either cash or a PTBNL. Rick Hahn has just pulled a rabbit out of a hat.

Sad. Beckham came up in '09 and was fantastic. Seeing him hit the ball the opposite way with authority was a nice change-of-pace from the Fields' and Borchard's that the Sox were 'good' at producing.

Unfortunately, he's been consistently mediocre since then. He's a useful player if he's not being paid too much or relied upon too heavily, but it's well-past time he and the Sox parted ways.

Richards out 6-9 months. Are they planning on converting Beckham to the mound?

Beckham has a full season's worth more MLB experience than any other hitter from his draft. Maybe he would have developed better with more minor league time. He has had easily the best career of any Beckham from that draft though.

Richards goes down and they go get a position player?

Hey, Angels! Colon! Bartolo Colon!

I hope the Mets are interested in trading for Gordon Beckham!

Beckham was one of the guys I thought the Jays may have taken a cheap flier on for 2B in the off-season.

Turns out Steve Tolleson and Munenori Kawasaki were better options.

He's a headcase that has tinkered with his swing to the point of disaster. If you watch his swing right now it's the long, looping swing of a guy you'd think was a big power hitter at a corner. He cannot pull the ball for any authority and his opposite field power has dried up as well.

Really the only thing he brings is relative durability (not much of a plus when it's replacement level production) and solid defense. His defense is not enough to carry him as a regular and IMO it's not enough to carry him as a utility player either.

I remember kinda wanting the Royals to get him last summer. He has been pretty bad for awhile it seems.

I love watching Beckham play defense but not enough to justify a .221/.263/.336 batting line. Robin Ventura added to the frustration by constantly* batting him second.

Marcus Semien should really be the starting 2nd baseman right now but apparently they've called Carlos Sanchez up instead.

*- I think it was constant. It seemed like it was.

Does this mean the Angels have given up on Grant Green as a useful backup? The A's found his glove to be a big chunk of teflon. Perhaps the Angles have come to the same conclusion.
