Angels acquire Rich Hill from Red Sox

Rich Hill has spent all season at Triple-A and now the Red Sox have traded him for cash considerations the Angels, who immediately called up the left-handed reliever.

This season at Triple-A for the Red Sox he posted a 3.23 ERA and 45/17 K/BB ratio in 39 innings, holding opponents to a .206 batting average and zero homers.

Doesn't say how much cash, but from watching him "pitch" briefly in both games of a double header, I hope it was less than a dollar. 4 batters faced, 3 walks, 1 hit, one wild pitch. Here's what you can get for a dollar or slightly more:

$1.00 Brad Mills
$1.05 Freedom

Either is a better buy than Hill.

It was something else watching him come up in 2006 for what figured to be his last chance with the Cubs, and then seemingly, putting it together. He was great fun to watch in 2007, but boy, did that season end up being an outlier or what?

This is how desperate the Angels are, that Rich Hill not only was acquired, but HAS to be given a shot at actual big league innings. I'll say it again: if the Angels had even an average bullpen, they'd be real threats to win the pennant. Right now, they're good enough to pretend, but that's it.

Fantasy owners of Joe "Crazy Name" Smith thank Mr. Hill for facilitating Smith getting a rare 2-save day.

Soon enough the Red Sox will have plenty more relievers to trade, including actual good ones.

It doesn't really look like they are all that desperate to me. All they gave up was cash and probably not a whole hell of a lot. Desperate would be giving up the next Jeff Bagwell for a reliever or something along those lines.

The desperation isn't in acquiring him for cash, it was in actually using him in a game that matters.

I'll admit that once upon a time, I thought this guy was gonna become a good pitcher. He's well past his Moyer date now though. Next stop, Darren Oliver.

At first, I was delighted by this news, as it led to the demotion of Michael Kohn.

But then I saw Hill pitch.

Kohn deserves more of a shot than he has been given.

Hill was brought in because he throws with his left hand and could be acquired for nothing. But he looked awful.

If this team would give up the idea of having a lefty and just use their best arms at better times they would be a lot better already.

[8]Well he was a good pitcher from AUG 07-SEP 08. I actually own a Rich Hill jersey shirt, which I wore to game 3 of the NLCS to watch him pee all over himself.

And he's 34 which just seems so old for him.
