Angels now might include Erick Aybar in a trade—latimes.com

Some good stuff in this article. I don’t know how the Angels can be considered “front-runners” when they “have to find out what it’s going to take to make a deal, and we don’t have an indication right now.”

Toronto is believed to have targeted Angels left-hander Joe Saunders, catcher Mike Napoli and outfield prospect Peter Bourjos, but the Angels’ willingness to include Aybar could make them a far more attractive trade partner than the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies.

Aybar, 25, emerged as one of baseball’s best young shortstops in 2009, hitting .312 with five homers and 58 runs batted in and playing superb defense.

Would the Angels consider trading Aybar?

“You have to be open-minded, but it would have to be something that makes a lot of sense,” Reagins said. “It would take a significant package to move some players. Erick is very talented. We haven’t seen the best of him yet. He’s still improving, and there’s a real good chance we’ll see that in an Angels uniform.”

Is that list supposed to be an "and" or "or"? Way too much to give up for 1 year of Halladay. Look at the Mets package for Santana. That is more appropriate than trading multiple years of multiple good players for 1 year of a superstar.

I don't know whether it's too much or too little, but it just seems like an odd package for the Jays to want - Saunders is basically the same as a bunch of the Jays starters, except he'll be more expensive, Napoli (while good) is also about to start getting expensive, and Aybar (while likely to be very useful) tripples up a position that the Jays recently twice filled (although he's likely significantly better than both the guys they signed).

I know nothing about Peter Bourjos, although the Jays really (really, really, really, really) do need someone else in the organization who can handle CF.

It's just a strange collection of players.

If the Angels were to trade Aybar, who would be playing on the left side of their infield?

Also, "or" what? IOW, instead of whom?

It is a refreshing change of pace to here this from someone other than a Yankees or Red Sox fan.

Beltre and Wood?

Izturis and Wood, no?

So you're saying that the Jays should trade Halladay for nothing?

God, the Twins got destroyed in that trade.

Bourjos is a guy who can cover a lot of real estate in center, and is developing some plate discipline; no power; as an Angel, he strikes me as the love child of Gary Pettis and Reggie Willits.

And then Melvin decided that Gomez was the player he really wanted for Hardy. It seems like we made need to admit to ourselves that a great number of general managers have different opinions on the quality of various talents around MLB.

God, they're dumb.

Is it clear whether or not Melvin wanted Gomez, or whether he just really wanted to get rid of Hardy's contract before he got his arbitration raise?

We already know this, and admit this, and it's not hard to see why they would, given the needs of their teams, the biases of their scouts, and the leanings of the organizational philosophies.

But all of that doesn't change the fact that the players the Twins got for Santana have been virtually useless during their time in a Twins' uniform.

Boy, I can't wait to see him in a Yankees uniform.

Utility man? I suppose he would be a nice addition.

He had other offers. The Pirates offered him Doumit or Capps, for example.

Bourjos is not a power threat, but has at least some pop unlike Willits. Over the last 2 years he has 15 homers and 24 triples. Defensively he could probably be gold glove caliber in 2010. Last year he made a great improvement in his plate discipline, adding 30 walks while losing 20 strikeouts. He's young enough to improve a lot as a hitter. I think his upside is something like 280/350/425 which would be really cool with his defense, but he might top out at 260/300/370 which is backup OF/defensive replacement status.

So you're saying that the Jays should trade Halladay for nothing?

As sad as it may be, the greatness of Roy Halladay is already gone for the Blue Jays. Just like there's nothing the Angels can do to bring back the 330/380/550 Vlad. What the Jays have to look forward to is one more year of an 18 game winner on a likely sub-.500 4th place team and then some draft picks.

What another team has to look forward to is one year of a top of the rotation starter. That can be really valuable, but trading 3-4 good players who you've got under team control for 3 years each is just too much to give up. I'd like Halladay, but not at that price.

Well, it's certainly a better package than the Twins got for Santana but it's hardly a great deal for the Jays, either because of lack of upside. I suspect this doesn't get it done, because I think Alex A will see this as one great asset and two baubles....and he wants a second great asset.

Aybar is a big get; plus glove, solid bat Doesn't steal bases or show power, but a .776 OPS for a 25 year old SS with three years under control is awfully valuable.

Saunders is a great guy to trade, though I suspect Alex A realizes that 'wins' and 'quality' are not necessarily synonomous. Viewed as a 180 cheap league-averageish innings there's value there. But not 'this is going to help the next good Blue Jays team' value either.

Bourjos puts up a 770 OPS...in AA in a hitters context. He is an ok guy to own but his value is mostly in cost-control. You can buy Coco Crisp for a couple of mil, apparently so that's pretty much the upside scenario for Bourjos and there's less risk of failure there. Like with Saunders, the right concept for Angels to trade....and perhaps the right for a team in another division to use to try to get to 90 wins cheaply to make a run, but not enough for the Jays I'd guess.

Aybar is a big get; plus glove,

Rally, your projections say he's a slightly below average SS. Do your eyes say the same? I've always liked Aybar's defense, but if he's slipped, this could be a great time to sell. I gotta think Halladay for a declining SS, an average pitcher and a B- prospect is a pretty good deal for the Angels. Now if Aybar's a gold glove SS, it's not that great.

He was +7.6 and +10.1 UZR/150 on Fangraphs. Not sure where the projection comes from; then again, it's a defensive metric so like the rest the error bars are significant still.
