Angels reliever Scot Shields likely to retire

Astonishing ex-Angel: S.H.I.E.L.D.S.

Scot Shields, whose durability and dependability made him one of baseball’s most effective setup men from 2004-2008, is leaning toward retirement.

“I would say probably,” Shields said before the Angels’ game against the Oakland Athletics Tuesday night. “There’s a business and a personal side of it. From the business side, you look at the bullpen and you can see all the young relievers they have coming up.

“On the personal side, your family comes first, and I’ve missed too much of my life with them. It might be time to go home.”

...But Shields suffered a left-knee injury that required season-ending surgery in June 2009 and he was unable to bounce back this season, going 0-3 with a 5.28 earned-run average in 46 innings over 43 games. He was shut down because of a sore elbow after a Sept. 7 appearance and will not pitch again this season.

Always liked this guy. Too bad he'll end up a footnote. If he had gotten to start or close, he might be somewhat remembered. Angels fans, could he have been a capable starter? I remember him being fairly effective, albeit in short outings, when he got a brief chance in that role.

He was an average starter at best, really, a 5-inning 5th starter. As a middle reliever, he was fantastic. He'll definitely be missed. The Angel bullpens were generally the strongest part of all their playoff teams this past decade, and Shields was a huge piece to that pen.

How common is a guy like Shields - a mid-level talent who spends all of a fairly lengthy career with one team? That seems particularly rare in this era of FA/non-tendering.

It's even more amazing, really, that they gave Robb Quinlan eight seasons...

For some reason I always equated Scot Shields and Scott Downs as guys who excelled at middle relief and always made you wonder if they could close or start (though Downs in fact BECAME a middle reliever because he didn't work out as a starter)

EDIT: And also because they have (almost) the same name

I am glad to hear that he is likely to retire. He's been toast for a couple of years now and watching him has just been painful.
