Angels’ Simmons sprains ankle; X-rays negative on Ohtani’s hand

Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons left Los Angeles’ Monday night game against the Minnesota Twins in Anaheim, Calif., due to a left ankle injury in the eighth inning.

Los Angeles manager Brad Ausmus said that X-rays were negative, but Simmons was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. An MRI exam is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

Simmons was trying to beat out a grounder into the hole between first and second when he landed awkwardly while stretching for the first base bag and then tumbled to the ground. He had to be helped off the field and couldn’t put any pressure on the ankle.

Do you suppose Mike Trout has any regrets?

Obligatory "All x-rays are negative" . . .

How has Ohtani looked at the plate this year? His numbers don't look great but it's a very small sample size. I guess I'm wondering whether he's good enough that it's worth risking his recovery from TJ surgery or should they just have him focus on his rehab this season.

Simmons has been diagnosed with a complete tear of the ankle ligament, and will miss two to three months.

They say he will rehab at the Cespedes Ranch in Florida.

He hits the ball hard, and he's got a nice swing (they would say it spends a lot of time in the hitting zone). He's not just hacking away up there. I think as he gets more familiar with what to expect, he could hit pretty consistently like he did last year (when he put up a .925 OPS in about 400 PAs).

I think until he shows he can't do one or the other, it's worth having him try both. If he were just a hitter coming from Japan, I think he'd be behind Ichiro and probably Matsui in terms of potential, but better than everyone else. I might put him ahead of Matsui - his OPS last year was higher than anything Matsui ever put up for a full season in the US.

His average exit velo is actually higher than it was last season, if you can believe it, but he's just not barreling the ball up yet. I expect that to come around. His bat's for real, and anything's better than what Justin Bour's given the Angels, so he'll DH until he can't.

I still think he's a better pitcher than hitter right now, but I'd bet he ends his career with less than 50% of his value from pitching.

How much prep did he get? If he just started hitting a few weeks ago, he's way behind everyone else.

Thanks. I don't have any doubts about the long-term quality of his bat once he's done rehabbing. My question was more about whether there was any lingering effect of the surgery on his hitting. Doesn't seem like that's the case based on what folks have written here.
