Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani has mixed results in 1 1/3 innings on mound | LA Times

“It’s still too early to tell, but I think I’m going in the right direction,” he said through an interpreter. “It’s just the first start.”

Ohtani struck out two Milwaukee Brewers and had one strike back, Keon Broxton homering to lead off the second inning. His fastball regularly reached the mid-90s, with a top-end speed of 97 mph.

He also gave up an unearned run, a ground-rule double, walked one batter and mostly fell behind hitters, fighting his control. One of his pitches was officially scored as wild.

So, Dice K 2.0?

Yeah, too early to say anything.

Rick Ankiel 2.0?

It's an early spring training game. He'll adjust.

Who cares how he pitches ... let's see him hit!

That is a weird way of writing "1 wild pitch."

I'm thinking the author is trying to accent the fact that he was wild, even though he only had one wild pitch. Carlos Martinez had only one wild pitch in his spring training debut yesterday, but watching the game, he was wild as heck.... he couldn't spot most of his pitches and crossed the catcher up several times in his one an 1/3rd of an inning.

Were there maybe a couple of pitches ruled as passed balls that could’ve been wild pitches? That is a bit of odd phrasing though.

I think it means that ballpark pest Billy Crystal was at the game, doing his Sammy Davis Jr. impression, and said, "Let me tell you, mi compadre, that last pitch was, like, wild."

Or Bob Uecker called it "just a bit outside."

Maybe the pitch was "Whoah! Wild!" as in cool; gnarly being so 1980s and all...
