Anthony Rizzo made a dramatic return, the Cubs rallied in the ninth and they still lost … again – The Athletic

Surprise return for Rizzo. Does Theo blow up this team if they fail to make the playoffs?

I don't think they need to blow it up, but I could totally see them making a major move (i.e. trading a key player) among other things. At this point, I think even the optimists agree that this is a pretty flawed team that's going to be lucky to get into the Wild Card game. This would continue a decline that we've seen since 2016, going from winning the World Series to losing the NLCS to losing the Wild Card game to maybe missing the playoffs entirely.

He sounds like he's in the mood to "blow it up" if things don't start going right. I'm not sure just making the WC will be enough to change his mind.

I suspect Maddon is gone (deserving or not) and surely they'll non-tender Russell but the first has been a topic all season and the second is not a big move at this point.

It's hard to see what "big" move they could make that will also make sense. It's not clear how to improve this team in the short-term by trading away a star -- I mean if we had a top young 3B, then maybe you could trade Bryant for a good CF (say) and be a better team. The Cubs have Nico Hoerner (who has made a good case to be the starting 2B) and C prospect Miguel Amaya. I can't believe Amaya is really ready but at least there's a "logical" move of trading Contreras, make Caratini the starter, bring Amaya along -- that's not likely to help for 2020.

So I think he wants to blow it up but I'm not sure he's going to find a deal that makes sense. Unless he's gonna go full "rebuild in a year" mode.

Admittedly, I dont follow the Cubs on a day to day basis. but going into the season I thought the conventional wisdom was that they had maybe the best roster of young controlled talent out there. looking over Zips and Steamer it looks like they were projected to get maybe 25 WAR from position players and may be 10-12 out of pitching. that sounds like a mid 80s win team.

Has this thinking changed over the course of the season?
