Antonio Álvarez estará al frente del Ministerio del Deporte

There aren’t any English-language sources on this that I’ve found, so here’s a link to El Nacional. The upshot is that former Pirates outfielder Tony Alvarez (who goes by Antonio these days) was just chosen as Venezuela’s new Minister of Sport.

Here's a machine translation:

The President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro, Antonio Alvarez yesterday named as Minister of Sport to replace Alejandra Benitez. The fencer headed the office nearly nine months and laid the charge to order.

"I decided to appoint Antonio sport is an instrument of peace, going to the neighborhoods," said Maduro. "I urge you to attend the high performance (...) but to give emphasis to the sport of communities and schools, to overcrowding. Must strengthen the existing team and expand. "

Alvarez played professional baseball, artist and candidate for mayor of Sucre. This year two events of the Olympic cycle towards Rio 2016 will be met.

Also yesterday, with 35 votes were ratified the statutes of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee that had been approved in 2012 and underwent modifications.

"The Executive Committee drafted statutes had to be approved by the assembly, modifications to suit the Olympic Charter were made and why they were presented again," said Eduardo Alvarez, president of the VOC.

Among the changes are the increase in the percentage of women on the board, eliminating the requirement for a third of applications and the new structure of the board, with a president and four vice presidents.

Next Wednesday will be the installation of the electoral commission to govern the election of the new board. The 20 and 21 entries of the plates for the election to be made on January 30 will be received.

The first one was also Miss World, and he's divorced the second one as well and taken up with yet another beauty queen. And we haven't even gotten into his musical career...

He certainly lives an eventful life.
