AOL: Marty Brennaman: Cubs Fans Are the Most Obnoxious in Major League Baseball

Obviously…Brennaman hasn’t been to the bar I hang out in.

TRANSCRIPT: “This is what makes you want to see this Chicago Cubs team lose. Among all baseball fans—I can’t attest to the Yankees and Red Sox because we don’t see them with any degree of regularity unless it’s interleague play—but far and away the most obnoxious fans in baseball in this league are those who follow this team right here. Throwing 15 or 18 balls on the field, there’s absolutely no excuse for that and that is so typical of Chicago Cub fans. It’s unbelievable.”

“Throwing the ball back, that’s great, that’s a Chicago Cub tradition that other teams have picked up on, and that’s fine.”

“It’s ridiculous, it really is ... You simply root against them. I’ve said all winter, people talk about this team winning the division, and my comment is they won’t win it because at the end of the day, they’re still the Chicago Cubs and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up.

Brantley: “And then they’ll have no one to boo but themselves.

Brennaman: “Well, they never blame themselves.”

Brantley: “They’ll blame that old billy goat.”

Brennaman: “Yep.”

Well, I may be a Cubs fan, but at least I'm not Marty Brennaman.

Well I go to school in Boston, and I see plenty of Yankees and Red Sox fans with regularity, and I'm willing to bet Cubs fans can't come close.
   3. scareduck Posted: April 18, 2008 at 04:57 AM (#2749326)
Because of course this is just as bad as fans delaying play during a postseason game by chucking batteries and other refuse on the field.
   4. Dan Szymborski Posted: April 18, 2008 at 04:58 AM (#2749327)
Far funnier was the exchange today in which Brantley tried to get Brennaman to announce to the world that Brennaman had a Members Only jacket, but Brennaman didn't seem to understand what a Members Only jacket was.

Hey now, we won the division just last year! And in 2003! And in 1989! And in 1984! And in ummmmm.....

OK, sure, there's a high probability that we'll screw it up, but it's not 100%!

The Reds? No division titles since 1995!!

And their best player does nothing but strike out!! How do you feel about that Brennaman?

Brantley, I think we all must agree, is an expert on clutch, so I've got to respect his opinion.
   6. CFiJ Posted: April 18, 2008 at 05:03 AM (#2749331)
Seriously, I don't even drink to the point of inebriation, but I'd rather be a drunk, obnoxious, ball-chucking fan of the never-winning Cubs than be Marty Brennaman. I imagine you get used to being Marty Brennaman after a while, but that's still gotta suck.

Nicely played, Walt.
   7. Crashburn Alley Posted: April 18, 2008 at 05:06 AM (#2749333)
I forget what I was watching but someone said that a lot of people don't show up at Wrigley Field to watch the game; they just want to eat and get drunk.

However, aside from the incident of throwing around 20 balls back on the field, and their treatment of Steve Bartman, they're just like any other densely-populated sports town.

Frankly, these "best/worst fans" claims don't mean much because the only thing you can base it on are outlier events, like one Phillies fan (maybe there were others, I forget), out of 30,000, tossing batteries at J.D. Drew. Or the one time in 2003 a cherry bomb went off at an Oakland A's game and burnt some kid.

Some sports cities are more apathetic than others (Atlanta Braves), but no one city has awful fans. Sorry, Marty.
   8. jwb Posted: April 18, 2008 at 05:11 AM (#2749334)
Marty's just overreacting to the fans who were so happy to welcome Dusty Baker back to Chicago. I'm sure that Don Baylor would have gotten just as warm a welcome.
   9. Mark Edward Posted: April 18, 2008 at 05:25 AM (#2749338)
I am a White Sox fan currently living on the north side and practically never get hassled by Cubs' fan, even though I'll sometimes wear a Sox hat.

But I do hate that toss-the-ball-back thing. For whatever reason, it's become popular at Sox games too, to the point that a fan will get ridiculously harrassed if he doesn't throw it back.

Red Wings' fans are definitely the worst. The octopus thing is the dumbest tradition in sports. It is funny watching the Wings struggle against the lowly Preds in the playoffs.
   10. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 18, 2008 at 05:29 AM (#2749340)
The booing of Dusty is part of it. The other part is his idiot son's hatred towards the organization for not letting his fake voice broadcast games while he tended to other business on the side. Marty Brennamen is a fossil and an idiot.

Ryan As a Reds fan and a Brennamen hater, I would love to hear the details of this story. i have never heard anything about his leaving the Cubs-I remember wondering when he went to Arizona why anyone would make that choice, but I assumed is was just a general lack of taste.

Then you were probably in diapers at some point during the 80s. If you weren't, you'd know, even if you didn't own one.

Marty Brennaman would be at the other end of the age spectrum.

For those of you who don't remember/weren't born yet.

   16. SouthSideRyan Posted: April 18, 2008 at 06:49 AM (#2749373)
The way I'd always heard it Thom wanted to work his FOX baseball and football schedule while working the Cubs trainee/waiting til Haray left announcer position. The Cubs wanted a full-time commitment, he chose FOX and has been annoyed with the Cubs since. I've never really liked him, but he cemented his status as villainous douche to me in the '03 NLCS with (what I perceived to be) his jabs at the Cubs throughout the series. That and the fact that him and Steve Lyons were the ones announcing to begin with.

After having been to every Major League ballpark except PNC, Petco, RFK/Nationals Park, Busch, and Rogers Centre, here are my top 5 most obnoxious fans:

1. Yankees
2. Red Sox
3. White Sox
4. Phillies
5. Cubs

Honorable mention goes to Twins fans, who are obnoxious simply by being the least interested in what's happening on the field (and the "Circle Me Bert" phenomenon).

I confess, had a Member's Only jacket. The only reason I had one was because I got it for 75% off at a store closing sale. It actually was a nice jacket and lasted me about 10 years. It was the jacket that I would wear from late fall through early spring, unless it got real cold and I had to break out the parka.
I was old enough that I didn't really give a shiite any more.

Oh--you mean like last year?

They might "still be the Chicago Cubs," Marty, but they're also the only team in the division other than the Milwaukee Brewers that doesn't suck ass.
   21. retro-shiite Posted: April 18, 2008 at 12:59 PM (#2749452)
I never had a Members Only jacket. As my parents didn't have much money, I had a Members Only knockoff. Swear to god.

Nah--I'm not a hockey fan, and I certainly don't carry any water for Detroit sports fans, but I think the symbolism of the octopus is pretty clever.
   24. Eraser-X is emphatically dominating teh site!!! Posted: April 18, 2008 at 01:02 PM (#2749457)
Cubs fandom is near that end of the spectrum--I loved the Cubs UNTIL I moved to Wrigleyville and love them again now that I don't live there.

But they don't come anywhere close to Red Sox fans. Yankees fans, it depends a lot on what group we are talking about.
   25. retro-shiite Posted: April 18, 2008 at 01:08 PM (#2749461)
However, aside from the incident of throwing around 20 balls back on the field, and their treatment of Steve Bartman, they're just like any other densely-populated sports town.

If people can say (justifiably) that Bartman was just doing what any fan would do (and in fact, what others in his section DID do) in reaching for the ball, I can say the fans of any other team would've reacted similarly if they were in the position of Cub fans. You seriously think Yankee, Red Sox, Philly (or, hell, any) fans wouldn't have crucified Bartman?

Hell, those classy Philly fans are the ones who issued death threats to Mitch Williams after the '93 series.

(And mine was the "perfect thickness" for Michigan, at least a month or two out of the year...)

You're making judgments about an entire group of people based on the actions of several individuals who make up less than a fraction of a fraction of said group.

Bill Buckner received death threats. As mentioned above, LaTroy Hawkins did. Pittsburgh Steelers fans dumped trash on Tommy Maddox's front lawn after he blew a game.

Some people just take the game too seriously. It has no affinity with what club they root for; it deals with zeal and a lack of priorities and common sense.

I had a black Members Only jacket when I was in HS in the early '80s, pretty much when it was in style. I don't remember precisely when I got it or when I "lost" it, but it was roughly during the time when it was actually in style.

It's possible, though I'm uncertain about this, that I also popped the collar on my Izod/Polo/whatever shirts.

I am sick and tired of people tarring fanbases with a broad brush. flournoy said that I'm missing out one one of the best parts of the game. What a steaming pile of crap. I hate the Yankees. I hate the A's. I hate the Cardinals. I DO NOT hate their fans as a class. Sure theirs individual fans that I don't particularly care for and folks can lose their inhibitions in a big crowd, but I can't stand fanism.

Now, do I expect people to change their ways becausing I'm complaining about this? No. But, I reserve my right to vent whenever someone say the famns of ___ are asshats.

Politics don't anger me. Nor do the steroid threads. This does for some reason. Hey, I'm human.

   38. Dizzypaco Posted: April 18, 2008 at 02:17 PM (#2749544)
These days, its no longer acceptable to make crude stereotypes of large groups of people based on race, ethnicity, religion, country of origin, or sexual orientation. Doing it based on the team they root for is perfectly acceptable, which gives people an opportunity to feel superior to others. So that's something, I suppose.

I'm with Gary.
   39. SoSHially Unacceptable Posted: April 18, 2008 at 02:22 PM (#2749551)
What surprises me about cfb's comments is that he's also stated that the Red Sox don't have a national fanbase.

And I too am with GGC. No fan base has a monopoly on a$$holism.

Actually from Boston or New York? Probably not that often. Still, I'd be willing to bet that you could round up a fair share of St. Louisians who claim to be Red Sox or Yankee fans.

They'll also probably claim to be "die hards" going back to the 1990s.

(This isn't directed to St. Louis; I could say the same about virtually any other city.)

They aren't. I'm pointing out that boorish (in some cases, criminal) behavior is not rooting interest-dependent. I'm not suggesting that such behavior is typical of any team's fans.

Unlike you, with your irrationally broad-brush attacks on Cub fans. You're really getting to be a tiresome prick on the subject, quite honestly.

   57. Sexy Lizard Posted: April 18, 2008 at 03:08 PM (#2749646)
I've had some very unpleasant experiences with Cubs fans after ball games, which I didn't have in Boston despite taking the Green line by Fenway after my night shift for four years in Boston. My problem I guess is that the drunkenness seems a bit more extreme for Cubs fans, maybe because the afternoon games mean you have more energy to be an ####### than you would after a night game, and maybe the sun bakes your head a bit more in conjunction with the beer. Bizarrely, the only two incidents I've ever seen of loud public Jew-baiting having been drunken Cubs fans on the El after games. The second ended with a big dude threatening to fight the 4'11" Mrs. Judges after she yelled, "Shut the #### up, Eichmann!" at him.

The point is that I don't necessarily think that Cubs fans are more obnoxious than anyone else, but there are more of them and they are in a situation in which they are more likely to be affected heavily by alcohol. More alcohol = more ########, so I'm content to look down on Cubs fans with disdain.

However, you're still painting with a broad brush here. If you'd had that sort of situation with another fanbase, you'd feel that way. And I'm sure there's someone for every team (except the Rays, perhaps) with some sort of story. How about the Giants fan that was shot by a Dodgers fan?

If one is 4'11", I would think one would know that it is ill-advised to raise one's voice at a drunken hoodlum, no matter how satisfyingly the post-graduate insult rolls off the tongue.

I think that if you're in Wrigleyville after games you see more drunkenness than you do after games in other places I've been, and more drunkenness generally means more people acting like ########. It's nothing to do with Cubs fans per se, it's just that you get a lot of people drinking in the sun in the middle of the day and there will inevitably be a vocal and unpleasant element. It's not Cubs fans, it's beer and sun. But whatever.

My experience is that the little ones in public can get away with a lot more. I yell something on a train and get slugged and there's probably not much intervention. She yells something and nothing happens, or the other guy suddenly has a train full of enemies if he tries anything. Beating up tiny women in front of 50 witnesses generally doesn't go well for you, and even drunken louts can generally see this.

However, you're still painting with a broad brush here. If you'd had that sort of situation with another fanbase, you'd feel that way.

No, I know. I just don't like loutish drunks and because of the setup at Wrigley you see more of them than elsewhere, that's it. Of course I realize that the ones at US Cellular and most other places are getting in their cars and driving home, which isn't exactly an improvement.

EDIT: Also I have to live nears Cubs fans. It's hard to get worked up about Phillies fans from 800 miles away.

- agree
there is a WHOLE lot of people alcohol does NOT make them mellow but make them want to fight.
- and it is also the ushers/ballpark rules too. cubs fans here at the Box drink more beer than other visiting fans or astros fans and they get even a little out of line they get tossed. also the beer guys aren't allowed to sell to people who look even a little drunk

Beating up tiny women in front of 50 witnesses generally doesn't go well for you, and even drunken louts can generally see this.

- agree. only the brett myers of the world get away with this shtt
but i can (and have) gone up to fairly good sized males and asked them politely to please (um, use good manners at all times while in this ballpark)

- on the other hand, being a tiny woman sure didn't help patty biggio none when she was in chicago - she got punched in the face by some male whitesox because she was wearing an astros jersey. and i disremember hearing any stories about how all the other males piled on the a$$hole

Having spend a very long period of time in Chicago, I'm nut sure I'm getting the hostility to the Wrigley crowds that spill out into the streets around 4 pm. Having spent plenty of time with those people and the lunch time crowd on lawyers row on LaSalle Street, I'll take Wrigleyville every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Do you have any? I'll pay for shipping!

Alas, no. This was a number of years ago, and I didn't appreciate the camp value for what it was worth.

I do, however, have a commemorative Steelers can of Iron City Light in my fridge from about 10 years ago.

I certainly don't disagree with this. I'm annoyed on a regular basis by the drunk idiots in and around Wrigley. Fortunately, I don't sit in the bleachers.

Not that there aren't drunk idiots elsewhere in the ballpark, but they're a lot less concentrated, and generally a lot less drunk, per capita.

Marty, for all of his old foggieness, loves his life. Why would you rather be miserable?

Speaking only for myself here, my life consists of things other than my Cub fandom, such that I'm not "miserable." Thank god.

My point wasn't directed at Cubs fans in general; CFiJ said he'd "rather be a drunk, obnoxious, ball-chucking fan of the never-winning Cubs than be Marty Brennaman".

Which still begs the questions: What's so terrible about being rich and loving your life? And why would someone rather be a "drunk, obnoxious, ball-chucking fan of the never-winning Cubs"?

- i got the story from one of the astros wives. and patty biggio is tiny like me.

and fact is that darn near ANY adult female is tiny compared to bout any adult male and let me tell you something - me being tiny - being female and tiny in any sort of physical fight with a grown male is like a 10 year old boy in a physical fight with a grown man. how any female ever even survives being beaten by a male i do not know - unless they don't know how to punch. but even a good blow of any strength would probably break bones in your head/face. patty was lucky because the drunk was too drunk to punch good

- why barbara bush is kewl

1 - when she was first lady she didn't go blond, change the way she look at ALL, lose weight or apologise for being a big woman. when you in a job where you supposed to be a showpiece and people all talktalktalk bout what you look like that takes ovaries. BIG ones.
2 - "no man EVER forgets a blow job" - best line evah
3 - her and george senior sit in the rich people expensive seats behind home plate where people go so as everyone will know they important and a pal of the owner and Other Important People who don't know a squeeze from an infield fly let alone how many players on the field or which base is which. barbara she don't give a rats ass for that - and she is the ONLY person i ever seen there with a scorebook and she there to watch the baseball game and keep score.

which is why she is kewl i don't CARE what her husband and son did/didn't do

dr memory,

i wasn't there my own self and i didn't see it happen and there is no video of it happening. so far as i'm concerned, you have to decide who to believe and i believe a person who was actually THERE instead of whatever got printed in the paper or whatever anyone said afterward/spin

did YOU personally see what happened? because that is the only thing that will make me consider that the person who told me is lying

shooty,

yeh i LOVED the dome. i think because the field was more magical because you really weren't close to it. sometimes when i walk into the Box it don't really seem like a ML field, but it seems to small. the Dome was - grander ?!

(and yeah i know, by the way, ALL about some of the heckling that used to happen there. but far as i know, no small females got punched out by some drunk fan from the other team)

The top response for "Patty Biggio assault" is a link to a Houston Chronicle article about the incident. She got slapped in the face--not punched--and her brother-in-law put the guy up against the wall--so yes, a male did pile on the #######.

longer silence

had relatives die in katrina. suffer in katrina. and i have relatives in skool with evacuees and other situations.

so all i am gonna say is no comment except that all i heard from the evacuees is how incredibly better living conditions even in the bad areas were here. and how much less racism there is (to be honest, they hadn't set foot in tomball and a few other choice sites so i am not sure bout that)
