AOL: Marty Brennaman: Cubs Fans Are the Most Obnoxious in Major League Baseball

Obviously…Brennaman hasn’t been to the bar I hang out in.

TRANSCRIPT: “This is what makes you want to see this Chicago Cubs team lose. Among all baseball fans—I can’t attest to the Yankees and Red Sox because we don’t see them with any degree of regularity unless it’s interleague play—but far and away the most obnoxious fans in baseball in this league are those who follow this team right here. Throwing 15 or 18 balls on the field, there’s absolutely no excuse for that and that is so typical of Chicago Cub fans. It’s unbelievable.”

“Throwing the ball back, that’s great, that’s a Chicago Cub tradition that other teams have picked up on, and that’s fine.”

“It’s ridiculous, it really is ... You simply root against them. I’ve said all winter, people talk about this team winning the division, and my comment is they won’t win it because at the end of the day, they’re still the Chicago Cubs and they will figure out a way to screw this whole thing up.

Brantley: “And then they’ll have no one to boo but themselves.

Brennaman: “Well, they never blame themselves.”

Brantley: “They’ll blame that old billy goat.”

Brennaman: “Yep.”

While I disagree completely with Rain Dog's general assessment of Chicago itself, those "Horry Kow" t-shirts are a total disgrace.

"You're really getting to be a tiresome prick on the subject, quite honestly."

What's wrong with the Nanny? Doesn't she know "You can prick your finger, but you better not finger your *****."

When I Google that, all I find are a bunch of blog posts about how horrible White Sox fans are.

Well, that's a nasty truth. 8-) Seriously, I was quickly able to find the report on what happened. Maybe include "Andrew Herrmann" in your search.

did YOU personally see what happened? because that is the only thing that will make me consider that the person who told me is lying

Oh, here we go. I didn't see it, so I can't say anything about it. Bee ess. You don't know that the person who reported it to you was telling the truth, or whether she was mistaken, or whether she even saw it at all. For all you know she heard about it fifth-hand and is telling you what she wants to believe in her bitterness. So go ahead and believe it you want to, I certainly can't prevent you from thinking the worst about my team and its fans in defense of your team and its fans. I just think if you took a step back you'd realize that you don't know as much about it as you think you do.

What the paper reported was: she was slapped in the back of the head by a drunken miserable low-life coward, nobody said they saw who did it, and the guy they cornered had plausible deniability. No charges were pressed by the recipient of the battery (and notice I don't say "alleged"). I believe this because it is an extremely common way for these types of things to go. It would be uncommon for a person (particularly a person as wealthy as Ms. Biggio) to be boldly smashed in the face and nothing to come of it; that just doesn't pass the smell test.

re 101:

Cincinnati is a lousy place to visit but a rather nice place to live (outside the summer months).

Thanks retro. I can't claim to be witty, but I can recognize wit in others.

And appropriate when appropriate.

when she was first lady she didn't go blond, change the way she look at ALL, lose weight or apologise for being a big woman.

Oh, I was just being snarky. Combination of people ragging on both Cub fans and Chicago on BTF of late has me ornery.

Though I have to say, cinnamon absolutely does not belong in chili.

Besides, anyplace that elects Gerry Springer mayor can't be all bad.

The local chili is vile.

I will say that the last place in the city I'd take a child for a Chicago sporting event is the bleachers at Wrigley Field. It's a nasty, drunken, vulgar place. Too bad, considering that once upon a time, the bleachers were the place you did take your kid for a cheap afternoon at the park.

And I don't wanna hear about the behavior of Sox fans -- I've spent half my life at the Cell and the old Comiskey (which was a brawling tavern when Veeck owned the club). The experience isn't even close to the Wrigley bleachers anymore.

I didn't realize Brennaman was ticked off enough to try go all Biblical and smite Wrigley Field, but his aim needs a bit of work. West Salem is juuuuust a bit too far south.

dr memory,

of COURSE i got no way of knowing whether or not the person who told me what she told me was lying because there is no video.

but i have heard/read more than a few versions of what happened. and i have not never talked/written to patty

but i wouldn't be real too surprised if she didn't want to have to go in front of a jury give testimony - fact is she WAS assaulted whether or not the male hit her on the front or back of her head.

and this got exactly ZERO to do with the white sox baseball team or the white sox fans.

it has to do with a male human being who assaulted a small female he didn't even know because for whatever reason he didn't like what she was wearing. and actually i don't care WHAT the reason was he decided to assault her - maybe he didn't like 40 year old blond females who knows.

the point is that an adult male assaulted a helpless small female and they were not exactly alone and he wasn't exactly stopped by all the other males around

and that us females really can't defend ourself against an attacker who is that much larger and stronger

I think males would be hard pressed to do the same.

and asked them politely to please (um

You don't want to know how I originally read this.

but it made me very uncomfortable.

So you should all do as your told.

I am so kidding, I am. It's just a joke. And it's not even a funny joke.

From Angry Asian Man:
http://www.angryasianman.com/2008/04/welcome-to-chicago-fukudome.html

I know a lot of Cubs fans are happy about what Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome has brought to the team this season... which is why it's so ridiculous that anybody would buy and wear this t-shirt: Fukudome doesn't find racist T-shirts in Wrigleyville funny. But a Fukudome t-shirt with a racist image is apparently the hottest-selling item at souvenir stands selling unlicensed Cubs-related merchandise.

As you can see above, on the front of the shirt is the traditional Cubs cartoon bear face but with slanted eyes and wearing oversized Harry Caray-sized glasses. It's accompanied by the words "Horry Cow" in cartoonish "Japanese" script. (The late Caray was the Cubs' longtime announcer, and among his catchphrases was, "Holy cow!") Fukudome's name and number are on the back.

Great. I don't know what's worse—the fact that somebody (who is apparently "an Oriental guy") made this shirt, or that it's so damn popular amongst Chicago fans. What a way to welcome the franchise's first Japanese player. That's racist!
