AP: Another third baseman joins Dodgers

The Dodgers added another third baseman Tuesday, purchasing the contract of switch-hitting Tony Abreu from Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League… To make room for Abreu, the Dodgers optioned left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo to Las Vegas, where he’ll join the starting rotation Wednesday night at Tacoma.

Wilson Betemit and rookie Andy LaRoche have been sharing third base for the Dodgers recently, with neither being very productive. Betemit is batting .190 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 35 games, and LaRoche is hitting .233 with no homers and three RBIs in 12 games.

“To get another hot hitter in the lineup,” Dodgers manager Grady Little replied when asked why the move was made. “We’re looking for somebody who’s going to get hot. He’s earned the right to get an opportunity right now.”
...
Little said it’s possible the Dodgers will keep all three third baseman, adding LaRoche could be used in the outfield.

The Dodgers are determined to waste their prospects, aren't they? If LaRoche isn't going to play 3rd everyday, they should send him back down and look to make a minor trade for some help. I really am puzzled by some of their decision making.

LaRoche's OBP, despite his recent "slide" is .467, and his K/W ratio is 4/13, with 8 runs scored on 7 hits-looks "productive" to me. Of course this is Grady we're talking about here, where "productivity" is solely reflected in the RBI column...

Is Tony related to Bobby?

Is Tony related to Bobby?

I don't think so. There have been four Abreus in MLB history, and three are active right now - Bobby, Winston, and Tony.
