AP: Braves cut struggling LHP Redman

The Atlanta Braves gave struggling pitcher Mark Redman his unconditional release on Tuesday and resumed the search for a fifth starter.

Former No. 1 pick Joey Devine was called up from Double-A Mississippi… In six appearances, including five starts, Redman went 0-4 with an 11.63 ERA and gave up a staggering 38 hits in 21 2-3 innings.

The left-hander went on the disabled list this month for surgery to remove an ingrown toenail. He returned to make his last appearance Saturday, giving up a grand slam to Boston’s Mike Lowell in his first relief outing of the season.

“I still wanted to give him one more shot,” manager Bobby Cox said. “I thought it was only fair.”

Yay! But I do like how Bobby continues to never burn bridges.

Has this guy set some sort of record for grand slams allowed?

Redman was pretty much the worst pitcher I've ever seen in the pros this year. He had NOTHING.

If a former All-Star can get cut, then is anyone's job really safe?

Agreed, Timebomb. That will continue to pay dividends for the Braves longterm. Every time they dump a Mondesi or a Redman this way, it impresses the next guy.

JS/Bobby aren't screwing around this year. They usually show more patience. Thats Redman, Langerhans, and Wilson who've all been purged. All three were horrendous this year, but were dispatched rather quickly (not quickly enough though in Redman's case). Makes me confident the Braves will add another starting pitcher. What they'll give up is the question though...

I had no idea Francoeur was off to such a good start. He's walking a lot more this year, too. Obvoiusly a SSS, but has his approach changed?

you should check the end of today's Braves/Mets GC for a heated discussion on that.
As to his approach, definitely different. shorter swings after strike 2, looking to go opposite field. More patience, and taking more pitches. swinging at less first pitches.
His P/PA is up. His contact rate is up, his BB rate is up and his % of swinging at pitch 1 is down.
yea, the approach is changing. since end of August to now, he has drawn 24 BBs ( 13 this year already)

No one is appalled at this senseless attack on a fellow Native American, whose attackers continued to slice him even as he resisted?

Redman gave up just four grand slams in his career. The alltime leader is Nolan Ryan with 10.

Wow, that's a lot. I was actually talking about Devine, but that wasn't clear. Devine's given up probably no more than four, either, but his grand slam-allowed rate has got to be up there!

Hilarious, Sawney.

Devine is a rare case of the Braves rushing a prospect. It was an embarrassment the way they handled him in '05.

I hope the Jays can learn from the Braves lead....say bye to Ohka, Thomson, Zambrano, Towers, Clayton and Fasano. Wow 6 non-ML players.

I really liked Davies in '05--I thought he was going to be a solid starter. Then he just couldn't pitch effectively in '06. I hope he's actually put it together again.

(Yes, I'm in the odd position of having positive feelings toward both the Braves and Mets. It's like my having positive feeling toward both the Red Sox and Yankees, though I like the Yankees a lot less now than I did a few years ago. A certain advertising campaign has something to do with that . . .)

7 .. Don't forget Jason Phillips

Ten more than Jim Palmer.

Re: the heated Francoeur discussion - the only heat came from a guy who likes to make absolute pronouncements about players based upon scanty and shifting evidence.

The only objective opinion you can give on Francouer at this point of his career goes something like this: incredibly talented 23-year old, improving plate discipline and hitting approach, likely to experience fluctuating statistical performance in his second full season in the majors, should reserve cocksure judgements on player until he's got a good 500+ games under his belt.

... and even then he could totally surprise you, a la reyes last year. i don't know that jeff is a star yet, but he's definitely improved since last season. i hope that he continues to do so.

I guess the title of "Royals Pitcher of the Year" doesn't carry the weight it used to.
