AP: Catcher placed on DL with knee injury

Jason Varitek was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a twisted left knee, leaving the Boston Red Sox without their captain and catcher… “It’s been bothering him for a couple weeks and he went around second last night and twisted it a little bit,” manager Terry Francona said before Tuesday night’s game against Cleveland.
...
Varitek, who played in 85 of Boston’s first 104 games, went on the disabled list after undergoing tests Tuesday. Mirabelli started Tuesday and Ken Huckaby was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Varitek’s roster spot.
...
Boston also designated first baseman Hee-Seop Choi, who was at Pawtucket, for assignment.

Sleep, little Papi, do not cry
And I will sing a huckaby...

Boy, you're gonna carry this weight
Carry this weight a long time...

If THE red sox gave up on Choi, is there a team out there than would take a shot at him? Aside from the NRA?

The Cubs would if he could hit worse and play SS.

Wow, that's quite a headline. I expect to pick up my paper tomorrow and see stories like "VIOLENCE RESULTS IN DEATHS" and "GAME WON BY SPORTS TEAM."

Ken Huckaby called up to replace him. Maybe his job will be to go gunning for Jeter again. :)

Before Huckaby showed up, Francona held an audition in the clubhouse for a backup catcher. Third baseman Mike Lowell and backup infielder Alex Cora took part.

"We had a big tryout right here in the clubhouse. It was a blowout," said Lowell, who won.

Lowell "looked like he knew what he was doing," Francona said. "Cora looked like he was squatting like me. That hurt his chances right away."

I'm surprised that they didn't have one picked out long ago. Maybe it was someone who has since departed ... Willie Harris, perhaps?

I would love to see the Bucs take a shot at Choi.

I'm watching the Orioles-Mariners game, and they're saying that Javy Lopez has complained about his playing time and wants to be traded. O's told him they tried, but $8 miilion/year is a big contract for him. So, would the Sox be intersted?

He'd have to clear waivers. The Yanks could block, since they have a worse record, but would they? What if the Sox slipped below them in the standings?

Just thinking out loud.
   7. The importance of being Ernest Riles Posted: August 02, 2006 at 12:59 AM (#2122469)
Kendall would clear waivers. I think the Sox should get him.

"I would love to see the Bucs take a shot at Choi"

Remember who Choi's manager was in Los Angeles? The one who chose to start Jason Phillips instead?

I like Choi well enough for a waiver claim (especially with four empty spots on the 40-man), but it'll never happen.

"The Yanks could block, since they have a worse record."

If I'm not mistaken, this will most likely no longer be true an hour or so from now.

Great, they pick up another game on the Tigers. I may as well forget it.
   11. bunyon Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:01 AM (#2122702)
I don't get it. Looks to me like the day will end with the Yanks a half game back of the Sox.

Red Sox 63-41 (after loss to Blue Jays)
Yankees 62-41 (if they hang on and win tonight)

Am I missing something?
   12. bunyon Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:03 AM (#2122704)
I am. Sorry, I'd seen the red sox game listed as final already.

Vaux, you keep saying stuff like that. Do you not think the Tigers will win the division?

If I'm not mistaken, this will most likely no longer be true an hour or so from now.

Really? Right now its the 9th, Cabrera is pitching again, and if the 1st 5 reach base it makes Ortiz the winning run again.
   14. AROM Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:06 AM (#2122711)
Crisp flied out. I guess they don't want to set up the Papi tonight.
   15. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:11 AM (#2122717)
Choi has looked awful this year. In AAA. Plus, I think he's on the DL.
   16. NTNgod Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:15 AM (#2122726)
Hmm... Mike Lowell left the game due to injury.

Youkilis to third, ??? to first, if it's more than day-to-day.

Boston 3B Mike Lowell left the game in the top of the ninth after fouling a ball off his right foot in the eighth.

AP recap
   17. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:21 AM (#2122740)
That's right, bunyon, I don't think they will. The track records of 3/5 of the rotation, and the youth of the other two, screams collapse. Chicago, meanwhile, keeps winning a high percentage of its games despite pitching like ####. The Tigers can't do that, because their offense gets shut down by Casey Fossum, and now with Sean Casey replacing Chris Shelton, there isn't even power throughout the lineup.

Of course they might; they're in a position that any team would take if offered to it during spring training. But I have an overwhelming feeling that they somehow won't.
   18. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:25 AM (#2122750)
I think Vaux thinks the Tigers are going to go 2003 Kansas City on him. Remember when those Royals had an 8 game lead or whatever it was going into August and collapsed. I wouldn't actually be too suprised if that happened.
   19. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:28 AM (#2122754)
Vaux, are you a Tigers fan? I remember reading once that you were. Although at various points you've made posts sounding like a Yankees, A's, Rangers, or Rockies fan. So, what are you?
   20. bunyon Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:35 AM (#2122769)
Vaux, I got it now. I don't agree, I think neither Chicago nor Minnesota look like teams that can make up that much ground. But I mainly wanted to clarify your position. You always write as if it is a given that Detroit is competing for the Wild Card and I get paranoid I missed something big.
   21. b Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:38 AM (#2122774)
Am I missing something?

Yankees - 62-41 (.602)
Red Sox - 63-42 (.600)

BTW, I posted 18 before I saw 17. :-(
   23. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: August 02, 2006 at 02:47 AM (#2122796)
It goes back to the habit I got into when the wild card was instituted of thinking in terms of 'post-season cushion' for teams, instead of actual division lead. The cushion, which I conceived as a team's actual probability of making the playoffs, is the number of games by which the team leads the team currently in the wild card spot in its league (or its closest wild card competeter if it is in the wild card spot itself). That's sort of silly, of course, because if a team collapsed and fell into the wild card race, the other teams in that race would likely be different by that time anyway, since the entire structure of records in the league would have changed. But it's an interesting 'worst-case scenario' metric.

Gagne, I'm a life-long Tiger fan, but over the years I've picked up affinities for other teams, too. I actually am an A's fan to some significant extent, and a Cardinals fan to much the same extent. I made a post somewhere on this site within the past few weeks outlining my accumulation of allegiences (and my excuses for them) in more detail. The other posts to which you're refering were probably reverse-jinxes of some sort.

Vaux, if it reassures you any Liriano's got pain in his arm, specifically the elbow, but more specifically it's muscular and they're being overly cautious, and he'll be missing his start tomorrow. But it's a two edged sword: Boof Is Back! You never know if he'll be the second half tonic. (OK you may guess otherwise, but you don't know.)

It would be just awful if the division was decided by injuries.
   35. Chip Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:07 AM (#2122866)
So let's see, this is 3 of the 9 regular position players (Crisp, Nixon, Varitek), the rightfield platoon partner/4th outfielder (Pena) 3/5th of the opening day rotation plus the long man/6th starter (Clement, Wells, Wakefield, DiNardo), and the expected closer (Foulke) who have missed or will miss significant time this year.

Add me to those who don't want to hear anymore about other playoff contenders' injury problems.

AP: Catcher facing surgery on left knee
Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek will have surgery for torn cartilage in his left knee, leaving Boston without one of its important players in the postseason chase.

Manager Terry Francona said he hoped the surgery would be Thursday but he gave no information on when Varitek might return... "He was examined (Tuesday) morning and they found, I guess, a partial tear in the meniscus," Francona said... "We'll know, certainly, a lot more on the timetable after they go in and get him cleaned up."

I hate to say it, but with the age of that team, and some of those those guy's history, you shoukdn't be surprised. The Sox sure as #### shouldn;t be.

Theo needs to call about Javy Lopez NOW.
   39. Big Train Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:29 AM (#2122884)
alright, i will give you the starters, but Foulke?

C'mon, who expected anything out of him this year?
   40. Ozzie's gay friend Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:31 AM (#2122885)
Yeah, when 3/5ths of your rotation is over 40 and 1/5th is Matt Clement you shouldn't expect much.
   41. Chip Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:38 AM (#2122893)
C'mon, who expected anything out of him this year?

Well, as this Shaughnessy spring training column makes clear, as late as mid-March they were still expecting Foulke to be back in his old role: ''We've talked about [using Papelbon as the closer], but we're not even concerned about that right now," said Nipper. ''Foulke will be ready."
   42. Big Train Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:40 AM (#2122895)
yanks would block Javy, and Angelos won't give him to Big Stein
   43. Ozzie's gay friend Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:41 AM (#2122897)
yankees have better record as of now.
   44. NTNgod Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:45 AM (#2122902)
Javy doesn't have the 'intangibles' of Varitek or his magical pitch-calling abilities, though - he's ######## to get out of Baltimore.
   45. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:51 AM (#2122906)
Oh, and Vaux, if you're still here, did we agree to anything based on whether Wang's era is greater or less than 4? Remember, from the Shapiro thread?
   46. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: August 02, 2006 at 04:52 AM (#2122908)

And will at the end of the season :D.

AP: Catcher facing surgery on left knee

So, I have to figure that the AP's headline writer is a Mr. Ketirav, and if he types the name of the Red Sox' catcher, he'll be sent back to his home dimension. That's the only explanation I can see for these headlines.
   48. "Andruw for HoF" sure died down Posted: August 02, 2006 at 08:01 AM (#2122960)
I don't think 3m to block Javy Lopez is worth it, but rationality is out the window when it comes to the Holy War.

If a team claims someone, can they work out a trade? Or is it only when the player goes unclaimed?
   49. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: August 02, 2006 at 08:58 AM (#2122970)
Gagne, I can't find it, but I vaguely remember it. The BTF search engine sucks. If someone can dig it up, I'd appreciate it. We may have had a handle bet or something like that.
   50. John Reynard Posted: August 02, 2006 at 11:48 AM (#2122986)
If a team claims someone and has the priority claim they have exclusive trading rights to that player. Baltimore normally wouldn't have much leverage with Javy as teams would assume they would prefer nothing to keeping him and paying $3M. But at the moment Boston might be desperate enough to offer something marginally useful like Edgar Martinez or another 25-26 year old with promise on the mound.
