AP: Duchscherer deals as A’s beat Red Sox [1-hitter]

Justin Duchscherer carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, Ryan Sweeney homered and the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Saturday night for their first series win in their past five.

Duchscherer (4-3) outdueled Josh Beckett and had a perfect game going into the sixth before he plunked Jason Varitek to start the inning. David Ortiz broke up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle with one out in the seventh.

Duchscherer struck out four and didn’t issue a walk in eight innings, allowing just that one hit. Huston Street finished the team’s second shutout of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save in 12 chances.

Obviously, when I thought Duchscherer was out for the year with some kind of shoulder thing, I had the wrong A's pitcher in my head.

He missed most of last year due to injury.

Half-game back!

Nothing is more predictable than a Devil Rays thread high jack on the first post.

I'm glad to see Duke taking full advantage of his long-awaited opportunity to be in the rotation. Hopefully he can stay healthy and have a good year.

Geeze, Jim, can we please talk about the Red Sox for once!

I'm glad Duchsherer gave up the one hit so they'd pull him after 101 pitches. Otherwise the rest of his season would look a lot like Lester's will. Not that the Red Sox were negligent in that game, I wouldn't pull someone with a no-no unless they'd walked 8 guys and were over 140 or something, but I don't like his chances for continued success in the short term.

Yay Duke! And I thought they were just the "Rays" now.

Boston has some wild home-road splits. I grasp why the offense has lost about almost 1.5 runs or so from what they do in Fenway, but how the hey do they give up almost a run and a half more on defense, away from what is still one of the best hitter's parks in the majors?

Sample size oddity maybe? Looking at the past few seasons they don't appear to have abnormal home/road record splits, though it has always kind of seemed that way to me since the Rays have had some nice performances at home against the Red Sox the past few years but seem to get reamed every time they go to Fenway.

Hey, that sort of qualifies as talking about the Red Sox!
