AP: Griffey will miss rest of season with groin strain

Ken Griffey Jr. will miss the rest of the season because of a strained groin, the latest in a string of injuries to Cincinnati’s All-Star outfielder… “He’s done,” manager Pete Mackanin said before the opener of a four-game series at San Francisco. “It’s a season-ending injury, but it could have been worse. It’s not the worst-case scenario, so we’re happy about that.”
...
Had this injury happened earlier in the season, Griffey could have come back, Mackanin said. “But there’s no reason to do it now,” Mackanin said. “The outfield, it can be improved upon at Wrigley Field. I’m not blaming his injury on that, but it’s not one of the better surfaces in the league.”
...
The 37-year-old Griffey has been on the disabled list eight times since 2000, missing nearly a month early in the 2006 season because of swelling behind his right knee and sitting out 22 of the last 24 games after dislocating a toe.

His playing time also has been limited by torn hamstrings, a torn knee tendon, a dislocated shoulder and a torn ankle tendon. He broke his left hand in an accident at home last December.

Usually I take opposing teams' gripes about Wrigley as sour grapes about how cramped everything is there. But I was in the bleachers on Tuesday, and the outfield looked just terrible, pockets everywhere.

I quite liked Griffey's way of describing the injury.

The best way I can describe it is it felt like somebody bungee jumped off my right nut

Not that the Wrigley outfield isn't in bad shape, and not that it didn't contribute to Junior's injury but he appeared to hurt himself taking a swing prior to the outfield mishap.

Dunn was moaning about the state of the outfield as well, when someone asked him about the ball he was adjudged to have trapped. He was still adamant he'd caught it. Difficult to tell on the highlights.

Of course it didn't matter whether Dunn caught it or not, Theriot tagged up on the play.

The grass was supposed to be re-done in the offseason by the White Sox groundscrew guy, but I heard it may be put off due to ownership issues.

Now there's a compound noun that ought to be hyphenated.

Those that tend to grass need love too.

Yes, Dunn said that himself, but was still annoyed.

Sounds more like the guy giving the love to the grass. Could explain the bad patches in the outfield.

Well, if it's any consolation, there are plans in place to replace Wrigley's playing field this off=season. (If the Cubs play into October, it could throw a wrench into those plans.) Wrigley's the only field left without a modern drainage system (and obviously, to install drainage, new sod and dirt would have to be put in place).

Hey, whatever floats his boat. Chicago's a pretty tolerant town.

So who had September 19th in the pool?

I was watching, and I have to say that Griffey kept his wits about him and underhanded the ball to the infield.

Maybe it was a descendant of Onan. I know you want to feel the earth move but it's generally understood as a figure of speech.

Best Regards

When I went to bed last night it was September. Now, apparently, it's May. What the hell kind of a night did I have?
