AP: Mets’ Church taken to hospital with another concussion

While trying to break up a game-ending double play, Ryan Church of the New York Mets sustained a mild concussion when his head banged into the right knee of Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar on Tuesday night.

Church had a red scrape on the right side of his forehead, and the Mets said he would be taken to Piedmont Hospital for a precautionary examination since he sustained a concussion in spring training. The right fielder was not available for comment.

Escobar was helped off the field and had a large wrap on his knee in the clubhouse. He shooed away reporters, only saying, “No DL.”

Church was sprawled face down in the dirt for several minutes, but he never lost consciousness. He finally rolled over and walked slowly to the Mets clubhouse.

This was his second concussion of the year. During spring training, he went down in a collision with teammates Marlon Anderson while chasing Andruw Jones’ popup in a game against the Dodgers.

I just caught it on the SportsCenter rundown, pretty nasty looking. For those who didn't see, Escobar was jumping into the air to avoid a slide by Church, with his momentum going a bit towards first base, and Church was coming in full speed getting down into a slide, so they both hit each other pretty hard. Escobar's knee took Church's helmet clean off. Afterwards, Church was lying facedown in the dirt with his hands holding either side of his head.

Props to Chipper Jones, by the way, who seemed to be the first to notice Church was seriously hurt, waved the Mets' trainers onto the field, then knelt by Church's side as the trainers were working on him.

He's going to have more concussions if he doesn't learn to slide. Extremely dangerous play by him. Hopefully Yesco is ok, he did everything right, it's not his fault the dumbass didn't get down.

It wasn't really a slide... it seemed like Church was trying to use his body as much as possible to obstruct Escobar's throw to first by running into the shortstop. Stupid, stupid play given the situation.

No kidding. I thought you might be being a little harsh on an injured Met - I can understand the sentiment, of course - but that was a terrible "slide". In fact, it wasn't a slide at all. Had the batter/runner not been out on the throw, he should have been called out for interference. I'm amazed Escobar wasn't hurt worse (and that he nearly cleared Church). Just a terrible, terrible slide on Church's part.

"Church had a red scrape on the right side of his forehead" because that was the first part of his body to hit the dirt.

No word--no mention really--on Escobar since last night, when it was reported his knee and left hamstring were heavily iced. I guess whiplash on the hammy.

The first one wasn't quite so bad as this, in execution or effect. That play Escobar took a really odd route through the bag, running directly over 2B toward 1B, right out into the running lane. Chuch had already slid, feet first, and was popping up when he head butted Escobar's thigh. The one above was a lot worse and a lot more Church's fault.

Yikes. That's a terrible "slide" by Church. If he really doesn't have a concussion then he's lucky Escobar got him on the skull and not in the face where it would have really hurt.
