AP: Ramirez joins 500 homer club with milestone drive

Manny Ramirez joined the exclusive 500-home run club Saturday night, hitting a drive off Baltimore Orioles right-hander Chad Bradford to become the 24th major leaguer to reach the milestone.

Ramirez drove the first pitch into the seats in right-center in the sixth inning. He watched the flight of the ball, then took off around the bases.

He exchanged a high-five with first base coach Luis Alicea, then hugged on-deck hitter Mike Lowell as he crossed the plate.

Opposite field no doubter - is there a better way to do it?

Jim Thome's was pretty good -- two-run, no-doubt walkoff shot. If only they were in a pennant race.

We'll miss him when he's gone.

For all the carping about him, would you rather have Manny on a 1 year option or spend 5 years and $75 million chained to Burrell or Dunn to replace him?

We (Mets) should have picked him up off waivers. Who can I blame for that, Russlan?

Of course PH

And he did it in front of a home crowd!

Mike Schmidt's 500th HR was another goodie: bottom of the ninth, two outs, two on, with the Phillies losing by 1.

If he's healthy and remains productive, then they should certainly pickup the option. I'd much rather overpay Ramirez by $5-10M for one year than be stuck overpaying Dunn or Burrell for multiple years late in the contract. Plus, I'd wager $75M/5yrs will be less than what they ultimately sign for.

A cold and unfeeling universe, Lassus. They put him on waivers after the 2003 season when he was owed 5y/90-100 M, in a market in which Vlad, a younger and better all around player, got 5y/70m dollars, with a club option for the sixth year. No one to blame really. If someone had picked him up, he or she would have looked really smart though.

Define productive. He's not a .400/.600 guy anymore, but his defense remains as bad as ever. He's like 2-3 wins above replacement - he's just not that good a player anymore.

How much would Manny be worth as a DH? Toronto or Tampa could really use him.

Productive=sustains his present (2007/2008) level of performance

IOW, .375/.490, or around 125-135 OPS+
