AP: Sheffield goes on DL, Tigers promote Larish from Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers placed Gary Sheffield on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with an oblique strain on his left side… This is the 12th time on the DL for the 20-year veteran and nine-time All-Star, who is hitting just .213 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 39 games.
...
The Tigers recalled first baseman Jeff Larish from Triple-A Toledo to take Sheffield’s place on the roster.

The left-handed hitting Larish, 25, will be making his major league debut. He homered three times in one game for Arizona State during the 2005 College World Series—one to left field, center and right in the leadoff spot. The Tigers picked him in the fifth round of the draft that year.

I would think there's better information about Larish to include, like him being third in the International League in HRs (behind Brad Eldred of the 60:10 K/BB ratio and fellow Mud Hen Mike Hessman), second in RBIs or fifth in OPS.

And on the subject of Hessman, what's the story on him? He's had a strange career progression as far as I can tell from The Baseball Cube. In 2002 at age 24, he made it to AAA in the Braves organization and hit .262/.321/.486 as a third baseman. Since he was blocked by some guy named Larry, he moved to 1B/OF and hit .248/.296/.440 in an injury-shortened year, but he hit well in a brief call-up with the Braves. In 2004, he hit .287/.365/.562 in Richmond but only .130/.155/.261 in 29 games in the majors.

He played Toledo the next year and hit .214/.313/.436 followed by .165/.269/.406 at the age of 28. Amazingly, Detroit re-signed him and he hit .254/.356/.540 last year and led the IL in HRs and RBIs, and is hitting .297/.388/.692 this year. Is there some strange background to all of it?

Hessman's a .230 career minor league hitter. That probably doesn't translate well to the majors. He's essentially the AAA version of Dave Kingman/Rob Deer.

Hessman is reputed to play Scott Rolen-type defense, though. I'd prefer him at 3B to Inge.

Inge is playing Inge-type defense over there. I think he'll be fine.

Do you follow the team, JMN? Inge is a clubhouse cancer and he also makes $6 million/yr for the next 2 years.

has sheffield played as bad as his numbers look? I have him on a fantasy team, have had him benched most of the season but my dl is full up.
