STL Post-Dispatch: Redbirds let a win flutter away

Rather than rationalize his fourth loss, Isringhausen suggested a meeting today with manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and general manager John Mozeliak to find at least a temporary alternative to using him in the ninth inning.

“I’m just getting sick of embarrassing myself and letting my team down,” Isringhausen said.

Friday’s collapse came with two outs and none on in the ninth inning. Consecutive base hits and a walk loaded the bases before Weeks sent a single to left that in turn sent Isringhausen from the field with his head down and twitching his glove.
...
“I remember in ‘06, I had an explanation; I just wasn’t telling anybody. Now, I don’t have an explanation,” he said. “I’m just pitching like a second grader.”
...
La Russa, Duncan and Isringhausen insist there is no physical problem.
...
“They can’t keep sending me out there when I’m pitching the way I’m pitching. We’re going to have to figure out some kind of remedy. I’m sure that remedy will give me some time off from that role and we’ll get somebody in who can do a better job right now,” [Isringhausen said].

Thanks, NTN.

At least Izzy acknowledges he sucks, and they're looking at other possibilities. I'm not sure how much more of this I can stand, especially after tonight.

So Ryan Franklin gets the first opportunity to close?

In the Viva El Birdos poll, conducted one day before the latest blown save, the results of over 1100 votes:

44% for Chris Perez (AAA reliever, great stuff, lack of control)
18% for Todd Wellemeyer (currently performing well in rotation)
17% for Izzy (remembr, this was before last night's loss)
8.2% for current middle-reliever/sometime-setup-man Kyle McClelllan
7.5% for "Closer by Committee"
2% for "trade for somebody"
1% for Ryan Franklin, currently the main set-up man
0.9% draw name from hat
0.7% force starters to go distance when ahead
0.2% for Braden Looper, currently 5-1 in the rotation

It'll probably end up being Franklin.

Is McClellan worth a shot? Need another closer for my fantasy team.

I'd think Franklin would get the first shot as well. I'd like to see Wellemeyer, although he's pitching so well in the rotation that I don't think you can take him out right now. Long term, it seems like he'd be a terrific short reliever.

Shibal...not yet, TLR is pretty fickle and I'd guess he goes closer by committee. But looking at his card at Kalk's, his #1 sim score is Adam Wainwright. We all cried out for the rookie Waino to close in 2006, and it took Izzy 10 blown saves and a trip to the DL before Wainwright took over for good.

But yes, McClellan has closer stuff.

Now I feel bad for insulting him. :(
