AP: Zack Greinke tosses complete game for third victory in Royals’ 5-1 win over Mariners

Zack Greinke pitched a five-hitter for his third career complete game, and the Kansas City Royals opened a seven-game road trip with a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

Greinke (3-0) joined teammate Brian Bannister with his third win, though his ERA climbed from 0.60 to 0.75. The right-hander was efficient, striking out four and inducing three double plays while facing only three batters more than the minimum.

Just one Seattle baserunner advanced past first base against Greinke, who retired 18 of his final 20 batters. It was the sixth complete game in the American League this year and second by a Kansas City pitcher.

Greinke got all the runs he needed in the second inning, thanks to a pair of longballs from an offense that entered the night with just five homers, the fewest in the AL.

Got my tix tonight for Travis Buck bobblehead day on Saturday and Greinke will be on the hill for KC. Looking forward to watching him go to work. I love the A's record thus far, but I don't think they'll do much better than Seattle against him.

No. First, Bonds doesn't fill a hole, and second, they need at least one more starter if not two.

Surely Bonds could produce more win shares as a first baseman than Glossy Rossy Gload. Alternately, Bonds could be DH and Billy Butler could be 1B. It's all about the cost-benefit analysis.

Can he play short?

You could actually have a lot of fun with the Royals' roster plus Bonds. Assume you dropped Gload to pick him up. You'd have two slow, defensively challenged 1B/LF/DH in Butler and Bonds -- a righty and a lefty. You could shift Teahen to first and put Gathright in left as your defensive lineup. Meanwhile, Callaspo could alternate with Pena at short and German with Grudz at second. If Hillman had an Office Space moment and stopped caring what people think, you could have an offense/defense platoon at four positions.

I'm a little worried about his K rate, but it's nice to see Greinke throwing well. And he's still only 24.

Except for signing Bonds and dropping Gload, all those players are already on the roster.

I don't particularly _want_ Bonds and the accompanying headaches, but that would be an interesting roster. You'd have a lot of players with strengths matched up with the weaknesses of other players. You can't deny the sheer thrill of having the option to pinch hit Bonds for Pena.
