April 7, 2013 OMNICHATTER

Some pitching match-ups to watch: Lester vs. Dickey, Sabathia vs. Verlander, Wainwright vs. Cain, and, in the ESPN game of the week: Weaver vs. Darvish.

And I didn’t even mention Strasburg’s pitching (against Cueto).

I feel like anyone wearing the double earflap helmet this season is making a really foolish choice. Everyone who isn't wearing the dual earflap helmet is wearing a new helmet that's better safety from concussions, etc., and these guys are opting out in favor of the old style helmet just to get a cover over their back ear?

I'm amazed he was safe. The ball was hit reasonably hard, and the turn looked pretty quick. I thought he'd be out by two steps.

Samardzija's middle infielders are doing him no favors today.

Considering the sound that was made when he was hit by the pitch, Chris Johnson is apparently hollow.

I've seen that replay four times, and I still can't tell if that ball hit Chris Johnson or not. I guess the umpire heard the ball hit some part of his uniform.

So, Tim Hudson didn't come out to the on-deck circle, so Fredi was clearly thinking about pinch hitting. Now the inning gets extended, he's hitting anyway. I guess he's only getting pulled if one run scores?

Strasburg done after 5+ innings. Matheus comes in with 1st-3rd and promptly gives up a bouncy infield single that Desmond couldn't handle. Basically the message today is: hit it to Desmond, get aboard.

   126. Brian White Posted: April 07, 2013 at 03:29 PM (#4406848)
Hudson gets a hit! The Braves have five hits today, and by my count, four of them were balls that could have been fielded by either Starlin Castro or Alberto Gonzalez.

Feel like Sabathia's change is a little underrated. I'm not sure baseball fans associate Sabathia closely with the change, but its a huge pitch for him, and pretty damn effective.

Uggla does a masterful job of combining terrible fielding with dumb fielding. He'll stand still on double play balls or run to short rightfield instead of backing up 1B. Such a frustrating player.

I noticed that. Although I hate him for the way he's punished the Nationals this series, I still have admit I like him for that.

Whew. No damage done by the Uggla dropsie.

A grounder to Juan Francisco, throwing to Uggla covering second base, always makes me super-nervous. There's way too much that can go wrong when those two are involved in a play.

If you're not kidding, you'll need to have NexDef installed, and if so then you just have to click the "alternate feed" option on the control panel of the video window. You'll see the "park" option there. Note: you have to be watching the home team feed for it to be available as a choice.

Yeah, well, it worked so well for Jim Tracy. Rockies were 5-22 on Sundays last year, after losing 17 straight Sunday games in 2011.

One thing you have to say bout Walt Weiss is that he uses the entire roster. It's the sixth game of the year and every position player has started at least once.

The way Dexter Fowler is hitting, though, the rest of the lineup could be the Sky Sox and they'd still have a shot.
