April 7, 2013 OMNICHATTER

Some pitching match-ups to watch: Lester vs. Dickey, Sabathia vs. Verlander, Wainwright vs. Cain, and, in the ESPN game of the week: Weaver vs. Darvish.

And I didn’t even mention Strasburg’s pitching (against Cueto).

this dexter fowler kid is doing good things
It's funny how there still seems to be a fair amount of resistance among baseball fans to the idea of Fowler as a legitimately good player. I think it's the Coors Field bias in action. I really enjoy Fowler every time I get a chance to see him. Kid's got wheels in centerfield, too.
   202. puck Posted: April 07, 2013 at 05:07 PM (#4406944)
The way Dexter Fowler is hitting, though, the rest of the lineup could be the Sky Sox and they'd still have a shot.

So many Rockies are hot, it's crazy. I half-worry this home run binge is going to get in Fowler's head and he'll go into one of his long slumps trying to pull everything.

no worries. it's a low point in Melvin's tenure as the move is inexcusable

setting aside Betancourt's actual playing ability what is obvious about the player is that he is lazy. this is not a harsh assessment. it's obvious to anyone who watches him play for more than 5 minutes. in his first playing time on Saturday the reason a second run scored on a wild pitch is that Betancourt stood and watched the ball skip toward the dugout thinking, I imagine, it was someone else's role to go after it. again, he just..........................stood.....................on.....................a.................baseball...................diamond.....................during.....................live................play.

that Melvin would actively seek out this player and commit dollars to sign him is ridiculous

Dayan Viciedo can hit the ball really far.
Ugh. Half of that was how Kameron Loe (aka "The Giant" from Twin Peaks) grooved a meatball to him at the plate.

But yeah. Really far.

Speaking of Fowler, is his fielding as bad as the numbers seem to say? He's a pretty good player already but if his defense is actually OK, he's borderline All-Star calibre.

No, from what I have seen of him his fielding isn't that bad at all. He's no Denard Span, but he gets around out there reasonably well.

Oh yeah. This was agonizingly obvious when he was with the Mariners, made worse by the fact that we got to see him when he was still a rookie, back when he still seemed to have flashes of motivation. And then, year-by-year, you could see him perceptibly become more and more indifferent and sullen.

it's shameful. I do not use that word lightly. a lack of effort to me is the worst thing from a professional athlete

that Melvin and roenicke invited this nonsense onto the team is truly shameful

Gotta love this professional at-bat by Carlos Gomez. Fighting off pitch after pitch.

EDIT: Took a really sharp defensive play by Eric Chavez to keep Gomez off base there. Still: great at-bat, I don't even care about the outcome because the approach was impressive.

Astros are now at a 12.3 K/9 ratio, on pace for 1998 strikeouts on the season. That would be a record, over the 2010 Diamondbacks and their 1529 Ks.

I hate it when the hometown announcer compliments a player and then they go out and help beat my team. Mike Shannon talking about Pablo Sandoval being one of his favorite players to watch, and immediately he drives in a run with a single. Heck Shannon is having a lovefest with the Giant's players today.

Harveys, J.J. Putz has no stamina. Making him throw a bunch of pitches is a great way to get him to screw up later in the inning. Every pitch Gomez fouled off was in the strike zone -- he wasn't swatting at balls, he was protecting the plate. I thought he shouldn't have wasted the first two pitches by trying to bunt but once that was off the table he did a fine job.

The only thing I ever made in my life was a fist
The only thing that ever proved that I exist
Broken glass looks best when the sun's goin down
Take it from me, I'm broken too
And there's lots of us around

Like swatting at flies till they cover the floor
Like pulling teeth, tie the string, and slam the door
Like the time I fell in love into someone else
Like the time I complained about the cards I've been dealt
Like they say when it rains you know it always pours
Like hearing no again and slamming of doors

Harveys...see what I mean? Putz is terrible during long at-bats. He seizes up psychologically and throws "frustration pitches."

I watched him for years when he was Seattle's closer. He has a tendency to get up inside his head, Benitez-style, when facing "pesky" batters. And he had much more impressive stuff back then than he does now.

Looking at some Cardinal blogs and the comments yesterday, and apparently someone is complaining about the team only scoring off of homeruns. Those guys should be happy we just scored off of a fly ball.
So far it feels like every game I have watched, if one team scores, the other team scores their next at bat.

I have this vision of Yuniesky Betancourt getting the game-winning hit.

It would be hilarious -- and would ensure that he's in the lineup for the next two months.

Incidentally, I'd forgotten how much I enjoy Uecker. He's definitely getting up there in years, but listening to him here in the 9th, he's still got it, got that 'spark.'

Adams with an automatic double to give the Cardinals the lead, but of course Rooney calls it a ground rule double. (Argghh...)

The Cardinal radio announcers really love this Giants team though.

Carpenter with another hit against Cain.... he's 7 for 9 in the regular season against Cain in his career... (plus a homerun off of him in the post season) have to love small sample sizes, but it's an impressive small sample size. 7 runs so far for the Cardinals in the 4th inning, not sure that any of the hits were sharply hit.

This MLB.tv for video with my classic RadioDelay setup to sync up the radio broadcast is working out better than when I had DirecTV; I don't have to readjust the delay time frequently with this new setup. LOVING IT!
