Are Jays fans more drunk, boorish and entitled than ever?

The Royal Blue Hysteria…

But musician, author and Jays fan Dave Bidini suggests that over the last few years, the people filling the blue plastic seats are increasingly drunk, boorish and entitled. “Guys with reversed baseball caps with wrap-around sunglasses coming in from Oshawa or Whitby…who act like jerks and then leave”, is how the Etobicoke native describes the problematic fans responsible for “a lot of vomit, a lot fighting” in the stands. Bidini suggests the Jays’ own marketing is partly to blame for turning their home field into a “drunken destination point”. “Baseball, I think has become very anxious and neurotic in terms of their fanbase eroding or dying off. They’re trying to make it come across as a bit more of a young people’s sport.” Though not a problem exclusive to Toronto, Bidini feels the team is pushing the wrong elements of the ballpark atmosphere to line up with a younger, more party-oriented crowd: lots of contests, big screen displays, giant beers and women’s team shirts that declare “I <3 BJs”. Bidini is baffled by the level of drunkenness under the Dome, given the price of stadium beer. “It’s not a cheap drunk. Like, you’re blowing a hundred, 150 dollars.” He’s convinced the rowdy, young fans are people just passing through Toronto for the night or a weekend. “If you’re a kid living in the city, you don’t really have the disposable income to go down to a Jays game and drink 17 beers.” ...Bidini will on occasion challenge people he calls “ugly-minded fans”. He did at a game last spring, one he was enjoying with kids despite a couple guys blasting the home team through an 8-2 loss. Bidini says they were especially cruel to outfielder Rajai Davis, now with the Tigers. “Their behaviour was reprehensible. And it struck me as inherently racist because Rajai was the only black dude out on the field at the time and they were all over him.” Bidini says he told the bawdy fans the Jays were trying their best. Other people nearby supported him, trying to shout down the negativity of nasty fans.

Wasn't the 2013 starting rotation the more likely culprit?

For those that don't know Toronto, that's a west-ender saying all the drunken idiots are east-enders.

Has anyone informed Toronto's mayor about this?

At least he's pushing it way, way east. Us Scarborough residents are always polite and cordial at the Sky Dome.

I'm not sure I've ever said or thought anything nice about Etobicoke or its residents, but it's nice to know we can at least agree on the fact that people from Oshawa are awful.

They tried, but he was passed out in a pool of his own vomit.

I see the annual drunken Blue Jays fan article has come early this year.

They thought it was a Leafs game. Got there, said \"#### it" and got plastered.

I generally agree with the "Jays fans are drunk and boorish and the team/Rogers/Skydome staff haven't done enough to combat this" sentiment, but this is a bad article. First, the team hasn't even played a single game at home yet. Save it for when the home opener repeatedly gets delayed due to drunk fans doing the things that drunk fans do. Second, the combination of "Jays fans booing Rajai Davis might be racist" and "the drunk fans are clearly from Oshawa, no fan living in Toronto itself would act this way" was kind of odd.

Yes. This article makes this guy seem like a jerk.

Yeah, but think of the children. I mean, if you disagree with this article you are pretty much saying you would like your children to be sworn at and vomited on if they dare set foot in the Skydome. And you are probably Communist. And racist, because Rajai Davis.

I guess no one would click on an article headlined "Jays Fan Drunken Boorishness Level Unchanged."

I don't see why Bidini is baffled about how fans can afford to get hammered at the Jays games. In the area around the Rogers Centre, the cheapest you're going to find a pint is about $7, plus tax (13%), plus tip (another 15 to 20%). The dome sells domestic cans (473 ml) for about $10 and "premium" for about $11 (tax included), with most people throwing in a buck or so as tip, so it's not like its a huge difference in price. It's a difference of about $2 a drinks so, if you can afford to get hammered at a bar, you can afford to get hammered at the game.

"Entitled"? Just imagine how entitled they would be if their team ever had a chance of getting to the playoffs.

I live in St. Pete. The drunk Jays fans came down to catch their team play the Rays. It's been good and bad. On the one hand, they brought girls with them. On the other hand, her brother was almost blacked out so I only got to second base with her before they had to split.

Taken in isolation, this quote is oddly inspiring.

Is it only Jay's fans that drink excessively? Isn't baseball and beer a proud tradition dating back to Christian Frederick Wilhelm von der Ahe and the old Browns?

It is a well-known fact that there has never been a drunk fan at a Canadians' or Maple Leafs' hockey game. The Calgary Flames not so much.

Shouldn't we ask the guys at Drunk Jays Fans for their opinion on this?
