Yankees could eliminate the Red Sox tonight, and lower their Magic Number against Tampa to single digits.

HOW WILL THE METS...oh, I can't even...Never mind...

Torres in the 3 spot tonight. Let's continue this trend! I hope it's not just because Didi is out tonight.

Welp, the Mike Tauchmann experience is officially over. Out 6-8 weeks with a calf strain. They really need Stanton to come back now.

Is Hicks officially done for the season, or still unofficial?

Time to give Frazier some sustained PAs.

Cubs have called up their top prospect Nico Hoerner to likely start at SS for the foreseeable future. Baez is out with a fractured thumb, and Russell was drilled in the forehead with a pitch yesterday (though somehow they left him in the game to run the bases, but took him out before he could play the field again). Hoerner will be the first 2018 draft pick to appear in the majors (maybe the first 1st rounder only, I dunno), and he only played in 70 games in the minors (and none in AAA) because he missed time earlier this year with a broken wrist.

He's supposed to be a cromulent enough defensive SS, but at least initially was projected to have to move to either 2b or CF (he will immediately become the fastest guy on the Cubs). He's a contact hitter with little to no power, though he's yet to get a chance to hit the current silly ball used in the majors and AAA.

"Is Hicks officially done for the season, or still unofficial?"

Going for a second opinion on his wrist. So, doesn't sound great. MRI was clean though. Stanton could be back next homestand, per Boone.

So, Judge/Gardner/Stanton(??)/Maybin/Frazier for the postseason OF? Not ideal.

I suspect Stanton will be limited to DH duty, which seems prudent.

David Ortiz & Jim Rice both @ Fenway tonight - probably interviewing for Dombrowski’s job.

deGrom has a 2.18 ERA in 60 starts in 2018-19. the Mets are 42-18 in those starts, as you might expect.

I'm kidding. they are.......... 24-36 in those starts, which is like the most Metsian thing ever.
   13. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 09, 2019 at 07:27 PM (#5877903)
First called strike to Encarnacion was clearly outside the zone, and the third called strike was clearly inside. Par for the course these days with these vision-challenged home plate umps.

They'll miss Hicks the most. His combination of power, patience and defense you can't replace.

Hicks is made of glass. You can never count on him being healthy. They almost have to bring Gardner back next year to have a viable CF the 50-80 games Hicks will miss.

Mike Trout should win the MVP of course. But the only reasonable non Trout option is Bregman. He is incredible - 35 HRs, and 100 bb to only 76ks.
   17. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:00 PM (#5877915)
Wilmer Flores hits a HR in his first game back at Citifield.

Alonso hits 2 HRs so far, up to 47 on the season.
   18. Ziggy is done with Dominican discotheques Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:02 PM (#5877916)
Trout is having a cryoablation to treat a neuroma in his foot. Which is not a thing that I had heard of before about three minutes ago, but from a casual perusal of the internet looks like it's maybe a chronic thing. Which is worrying.
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:09 PM (#5877919)
Mets showed a tribute video of Flores, who before his first AB got an ovation loud enough that he took off his batting helmet for the crowd in appreciation. then he winked at ex-teammate deGrom.

(it's a Mets thing; you wouldn't understand.)
   20. Howie Menckel Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:14 PM (#5877921)
Mike "Bon" Fiers of the A's allowed 9 ER in 1+ IP tonight to Astros, which seems like a lot.

Alonso 24 HOME HRs tie a Mets franchise record
   21. rconn23 Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:15 PM (#5877922)
I am greatly enjoying the new and improved James Paxton.
   22. Best Dressed Chicken in Town Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:18 PM (#5877923)
I believe Fiers hasn't lost a game in like 23 starts. That might come to an end.
   23. rconn23 Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:18 PM (#5877924)
GIO!
   24. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:28 PM (#5877927)
Fiers ERA went from 3.51 to 3.97 in one inning. Wouldn't think was possible in Sept.
   25. Howie Menckel Posted: September 09, 2019 at 09:30 PM (#5877929)
Fiers was 12-0 since May 1, after alllowing 20 ER in 25 IP to start the season.

he pitched a no-hitter in the game after his previous loss.

It's gonna be a damn shame if the Cubs miss the playoffs after what Castellanos has done for them. Just hit his 14th HR in 37 games.

Nothing like a 10-2 game in September for some “Who???” moments...Seth Mejias-Brean??
   38. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 10, 2019 at 12:40 AM (#5877969)
He schwarbed his schwarbs
Thus making him both schwarber and schwarbee.

Is schwarb a regular or irregular verb for conjugation?
