Arizona Diamondbacks agree on new deal with catcher Miguel Montero

The Diamondbacks and Montero have agreed to terms on a five-year, $60 million deal that, once finalized, will be the largest in franchise history. According to Fox Sports, which first reported the deal Friday afternoon, it could be announced Saturday.

One of "my guys", as I saw him come through San Jose during his breakout campaign in 2005. This pleases me.

I saw "...catcher Montero signs $60m/5yr deal" scroll across the bottom of my TV this morning.

I was positive it was "Mariners catcher Montero..." until I saw it scroll by again.

I know, I know, the BBTF consensus is only to sign a guy if he is well underpaid, but i don't think I'd have come near 5/60. He's probably worth 12/year right now in his prime, but that's a long time you're expecting him to stay as a productive catcher. I'd need a discount to take on post-30 years for a catcher or look to trade him.

A $60M contract is the biggest in team history, wow.

I mean, I'm a Phillies fan so I've become jaded by 9-figure deals, but still.

According to BB-Ref, they paid Randy Johnson $80 million after signing him as a free agent (over 6 seasons), although maybe that spanned two contracts.

Yes, it's a total of both contracts. He went and played for some bootleg outfit in between his stints with Arizona.

Salary 10,10,12,14,14

So they are not going to be able to trade him during the last 3 years of the contract, most likely. There isn't a No Trade Clause.

No, I counted $80m just from '99 - '04, before he joined the Evil Empire (then $24m more when he came back).

He'd get 10/5 rights around then anyway, right (it looks like they'd kick in in 2016)?

Wikipedia (welp) says that he signed a four-year contract, and resigned during the '01 season.

oops, thanks for corrections.

Yeah, but they could still move him to a big market team before then perhaps. I guess I'm contradicting myself.

I think it's a poor bet....the guy has had knee surgery already and is currently day to day with groin injury. The odds that he catches 600 games over the life of the deal are probably not all that great.
