Arizona Diamondbacks analysis: Yasmany Tomas contract keeps hurting

But a lot could happen between now and Opening Day. It’s possible Tomas could put together a huge spring training performance and compel the Diamondbacks to keep him on the roster, hoping he could provide right-handed power off the bench, something they could use. Or an injury or two could open the door.

But if the Diamondbacks get to the end of camp, decide they don’t want Tomas on the roster and need a 40-man spot, he might wind up being designated for assignment.

Even that, though, probably wouldn’t be the end. Tomas would clear waivers and, unless he wanted to walk away from his contract, would have to report to Triple-A Reno, where he’d be expensive depth.

But give the Diamondbacks credit: At a time when they’re trying hard to win, they’re willing to move on from a costly mistake.

GREG HOLLAND Free Agent Strategy - 1. Chuckle knowingly as 50 or 60 of your fellow relief pitchers find a home.
2. Pour yourself a refreshing glass of lemonade and look over tile samples for the bathroom in the guest house.
3. Settle down in the home theater to watch a little spring training baseball and wait for the offers to roll in.

This is the 4th camp he showed up to fat and out of shape. I realize there are "body types" and he would never look thin or cut even if he lost 15 pounds and worked out all winter. But he's never showed up to camp in good shape. He's a nice kid, by all accounts. But he's just such a terrible defender and base runner, he would have to hit for over a .900 OPS to just be league average.

He misplayed a single yesterday, committing an error and allowing a run to score. Just because he needed to underscore how lousy a defender he is.

I'm surprised there are not "condition" clauses in every guaranteed MLB contract.

I had literally never before heard of this player.

How do we know they are? The writer doesn't even have an anonymous source saying they will DFA him.

Actions speak louder than words. Last year they buried him on the DL, this year they brought in Jarrod Dyson and Steven Souza, and they already have Pollock and Peralta. So where and when is he going to play ?

Even before the trade and signings that brought these two in, the manager said that Tomas would have to earn his playing time, and that was when they only had Tomas/Pollock/Peralta and some minor league scrubs on the 40 man roster.

They have been dropping hints left and right, even to the point during the radio broadcast of yesterday's game, with Derek Hall in the booth, Tomas's name did not come up during his at bat. Not once. Awkward ! These roster moves pretty much seal the deal. Whether or not they remove him from 40 man roster , he is going to start the year in Reno, as he has options. But it's not hard to see the team DFA him and clear the roster spot and then send him to Reno. Nobody is going to claim him and they can always re instate him if they really need to. The guy has absolute negative trade value. There are really very few roads left to extract any value out of him, but maybe he can regain some value by raking in Reno. He's still fat, lazy, and a lousy defender. His only hope is some AL team needs a right handed DH and doesn't have a better option in their system. Fat chance. Pun Intended.

Tomas is listed as Arizona's primary LF in 2017, despite playing just 42 games at the position and finishing only 26 of those. Seems smart to come up with a plan B.

#1 Such are the luxuries of $20 M in career earnings I suppose.

OOTP talk:

Quite often, out of nowhere Yasmany Tomas will have a string of Juan Gonzalez-like seasons in which he plays poor defense but hits a bunch of homers. I'd say he makes the Hall about 40% the time when I sim through a century of games.

It's a weird blip in history we're living through, when a bunch of teams signed Cuban players to big contracts, and some of them turned out to be really good, and some of them had no MLB careers whatsoever and even the team's fans never became aware of their existence, but they still got $25 million or so. I haven't heard about any new deals like that in a while.

Remember that Arruebarrueana guy from the Dodgers? He's still on the payroll for $6.5 million, presumably to play in Tulsa or Rancho Cucamonga again. Still only the 10th highest earner "on" the Dodgers. I thought there would be more ahead of him on that list actually.

Well the Red Sox have their $60+ mil mistake still around.

The worst part about Tomas is that he has the talent to actually hit major league pitching. All he needs to do is work hard. For a guy like me who couldn't catch up to an 80mph fastball much less one at 95mph, it just sh*ts me. You've got this amazing talent and you just waste it. I know baseball history is littered with guys like this and every time it sh*ts me.

Well, from his point of view it's hardly a waste. He parlayed it into nearly $70M.

They sent a man to Reno,
Just to watch his career die ...

Absolute value can't be negative.

Hey, come on, it's what we do here.
