Arizona Diamondbacks set to sign Jarrod Dyson | MLB.com

I’m a little surprised the Giants didn’t sign him.

A baseball source has confirmed the deal is worth $7.5 million [two years], and a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that Dyson’s deal includes performance bonuses each year: $50,000 at 100 and 125 games played; and $50,000 each at 350, 400 and 450 plate appearances.

Jarrod Dyson has just 12 career home runs.

....But 5 of them came in a 40-game stretch last summer.

He was estimated to get anywhere from 2/16 to 2/22 at beginning of the off season. But the combination of a wheels first player coming off Sports Herni surgery and the current market conditions overall squashed that.

If he gets 98% of his speed back, it's a steal for the D Backs. If he loses half a step, he'll be far less valuable though. Still, at 2/7.5M it's very low risk, with potentially nice reward.

Very good fit for AZ roster. They really needed a good outfielder that can fill in CF when AJ Pollock has his next injury. And if they are stuck with Tomas in RF (or LF), this allows them to make Tomas the short side of a platoon and they can yank him out of there in late innings in the games he does start.

That platoon won't come anywhere close to replacing Martinez on offense, but hopefully Dyson's defense & baserunning stays at previous high leves and makes up for some of the gap.

Regardless of defence, no one wants to give an 85 wRC+ player a full-time gig.

Hernia surgery ain't a particularly big thing. And I'm pretty sure Dyson is fast enough he can get away with losing half a step ... a full step might start to bite.

#3's not relevant since nobody's tried to give Dyson a full-time gig before and nobody was trying now (never topped even 400 PA in a season). But that speed and defense plays just fine even with an 85 OPS+. He was never going to get a long-term deal and never will but betting on those legs 1-2 years at a time is a good bet. Even if we whack his defense in half, he'd be at 4 WAA in 3 full seasons of PAs. Heck, take it all away and he's still average.

He's a good bet for 1.5-2 WAR in 300-350 PA as a bench player which should be worth a lot more than 2/$7.5. (Now if it's 2/$15 ...) Funny how teams seem fine with handing $8-9 AAV contracts to unreliable part-time pitchers lucky to produce 1 WAR but not a part-time position player with an established levels of 2+ WAR. In a strict baseball sense, since it's not my money, I'm pretty sure I'd rather have him on the Cubs than LaStella and there's a good chance he'll be more useful over the next two years than Zobrist (also a good chance he won't). (Heyward is just the cross we have to bear ... speaking of starters with 85 OPS+...)

It's relevant if anyone expected him to get $8-11M p.a. No one is paying that for a bench player.

Just FTR, Billy Hamilton's career OPS+ is 71. The only season in which he posted >85 was in his cup of coffee in which he appeared in 13 games (and had 22 PA, because running).

The Cubs paid Jon Jay 8 million last year.
