Arizona Republic: Padres rally to sweep D-Backs

We’re still a few hours away from the probable counter-loss by the Dodgers to the Nationals.

The Diamondbacks came into Petco Park for a series with their top three starters set to face one of baseball’s worst teams. They left on Wednesday afternoon with three losses.

Trailing by four, the Padres rallied for three runs in the seventh inning against starter Randy Johnson then scored twice more against reliever Chad Qualls to come away with a 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks before an announced crowd of 24,563.

The Diamondbacks scored all of their runs in the sixth inning. They went down in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, with Padres closer Trevor Hoffman striking out the side in the ninth.

Not only did they sweep the Padres, they beat Haren, Webb, and RJ. Not an easy feat.

I wish either the Rockies or Dodgers would take care of business. As much as I've enjoyed watching the Cubs this season, I still feel leery about them meeting Arizona in the first round (assuming, of course, the Cubs retained their division lead).

Really? They beat Webb. But then they beat Rauch and Qualls. Beating those two is a #### piece of cake. The Dbacks bullpen is horrible, simply horrible. They must be the bullpen in the majors where the whole is significantly less than the sum of the parts. Just awful. Combine that with AZ's typically impotent offense, and you've got yourself a pathetic excuse for a division leader.

As a side note, since coming over the Washington on July 22nd, Jon Rauch has posted 6.19 ERA in 16 innings and has lost 4 games. Over that same period, Brandon Lyon has 9.64 ERA over 9 1/3 innings--and that's after he gave up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings over 2 games to LAD at home. And of course Lyon remains Bob Melvin's closer, and Rauch remains his top setup guy. And just to make sure he maintains the hold on the 7th inning, Qualls chokes away a lead today. That bullpen is filled with true professionals dying to outdo each other at sucking truly horribly

My perception on the matter is likely skewed by the series the Cubs played in Arizona, which took place in the midst of the Cubs' anemic offensive output.

Despite occasional hiccups, Webb and Haren have been very good. RJ has really turned on the jets since the beginning of July. Petit has been a quality 5th starter, and Davis is your average LAIM who'd win 12-14 games a year with average run support, despite being absolutely atrocious to watch. The problem has been two fold: offense that sucks and bullpen that chokes.

The Rockies are now five and a half back, but they're throwing Livan Hernandez against Tim Lincecum tonight, so the lead will probably go right back to six.

With the 2007 Central race being rather pathetic, and the 2008 West being the same, that 2009 East race is going to be a humdinger, with the Nats probably walking away with the division crown with 82 wins.

Well, the 2006 NL Central was pathetic and the 2005 NL West was pathetic so it could be that those divisions are just taking turns being bad.

I was all excited because they were a few games over .500 and closing in on the Diamondbacks. Then I spend a few days switching cities, check again, and they've gone on a 6-game losing streak. And what with Arizona's acquisition of Dunn and a seemingly revived Randy Johnson, it's looking pretty bleak.

Baseball is such an obnoxious sport sometimes.

Aha, new Giants pitching coach, Bruce Jenkins, refuses to let an arbitrary pitch count stop them from winning this all important game. Lincecum throws 132 pitches and Rockies lose! Rockies lose!
