Aroldis Chapman seeks closer role

But I want to see if Aroldis can be the next Randy Johnson…

“I’m waiting to hear [the decision] so I can feel better, concentrate more,” Chapman said. “I don’t think [it’s a distraction] because when you go out there to pitch, you can’t think about that. But it still would be better to know what they’re going to do.

“The truth is, if they were to make the decision, I would want to be the closer,” Chapman said, “but it’s not in my hands.”

Chapman said he relishes the role of closer because of the rush of pitching in the ninth inning. Baker said he’d planned to speak with Chapman about it after he’d pitched.

Starters are allowed to pitch the 9th inning too

Is Baker really making the decision? If I were Jocketty and I wanted Chapman to start, there's no way I'd be allowing my manager the call.

I'm imagining Jocketty is going to let Baker think he has a vote in a team decision, and then rig the committee such that what Jocketty wants, he gets.

@3: Walt Jocketty: the Frank Underwood of the Reds.

Chapman is the new Strasburg. No matter what the Reds do, they will be second-guessed this year.

No matter what the Reds do, they will be second-guessed this year.

To start the season maybe but if they put him in the pen and he dominates like he did at the start of last year, only statnerds like some of us will be second-guessing the Reds. (It's also possible that he could dominate early as a starter but it's less likely as he's still adjusting.)

And given the status of closers in the mainstream media and average fan, I'm not sure they'll ever be second-guessed if they just make him the closer.
