As Bloomberg departs, a soccer arena deal emerges

No word yet on how Mariano Rivera be honored during the ceremonial implosion of the garages.

According to a confidential outline of the formative deal obtained by Capital New York, the 10-acre site would encompass three of Yankee Stadium’s financially troubled parking lots, a portion of 153rd Street, and a building on the same street now occupied by an elevator parts company called GAL Manufacturing that employs about 400 people.

I always think of arenas as indoor venues, although I suppose the definition of arena probably doesn't mean so. In any case, this refers to an outdoor soccer stadium for the new MLS club backed by the Yankees and Man U.

Actually Man City, hence the Stupid New York City City name.

Manchester City (not Manchester United).

The city, in turn, would demap a portion of 153rd Street, take over the GAL site and give the team a 99-year lease. Only after 38 years would the team pay the city fair market rent. The city would also agree to issue tax-exempt bonds to finance the $350 million project, and it would grant the team $21.5 million in other tax waivers.

sigh. When will the insanity of corporate handouts for sports arenas stop. Of course, there is a reason Bloomie is trying to hammer this out before the changeover to De Blasio. Although De Blasio has been criticized for being too cozy with developers himself, compared to Bloomberg he's probably seen as a poison pill for this project.

the Stupid New York City City name.

Wait, really? I can't wait until they go out of business and are then resuscitated in York, PA as York New New York City City, or, if you'd prefer, New York New York City City.

EDIT: Or maybe York City FC can sponsor New York City York City FC.
EDITEDIT: York City FC should sponsor a team in York, PA called New York City FC. That's my final offer.

A lot of European soccer stadiums are called "Arena", especially in Germany. It always confuses me at first. A lot of them have retractable roofs (Amsterdam Arena, "Friends Arena" in Stockholm, but not all of them.

EDIT: Or maybe York City FC can sponsor New York City York City FC.

That would lead to some confusion with New York Stadium, home of their local competitors Rotherham FC.

Sometimes stadiums can be indoor facilities too.

so after all the money the city gave them for the parking garages they decide to tear a bunch down just a few years later, brilliant!

York City Tigers.

In NYC, the team can be sponsored by York College (of Queens). In York, it could be sponsored by York College (of Pa.). It's the St. Francis of Division III.

And don't forget New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College), which sounds as ridiculous as the University of Mary Washington (in Fredericksburg, Va.), formerly Mary Washington College.
