A’s grant Manny Ramirez outright release

Manny Ramirez has requested his outright release from the A’s and the team has granted it. Ramirez never played a game in Oakland.

Ramirez, who signed a minor league contract with the A’s Feb. 20, was required to serve a 50-game suspension this season for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy in 2011.

Thanks to Drew

Hmm, his stats had actually kind of straightened out, to the point where you;d think he'd get called up once he popped a couple homers, anyway.
he was batting .302 (19-for-63) with three doubles, no home runs, 14 RBI, 17 strikeouts and five walks in 17 games.
I'm too tired to attempt to figure out what Manny Ramirez is thinking.

Well, he did finish his 50 game suspension. I guess the obvious reason is that now he could sign as a DH with anyone. Maybe he didn't want to have his career finish under suspension? A legacy move? (Even if it didn't matter to anyone but him.)

BOOOOOOOOOO

I was really hoping Manny would give the A's that one last magic season - think Frank Thomas, 2006.

The best way to do it is to hang upside-down from a playground swing by your legs, and have your friend twist the chains around and around until they won't twist any further, and then let the swing spin you, and then jump up immediately and without pausing, chase a swarm of gnats down a steep hill.

I get it! Manny intentionally played bad for the duration of his suspension and the A's thought he was washed up. Now he'll sign with the Cardinals and hit 35 home runs in 200 at-bats and win NLCS MVP.

Is there any team that is short on outfielders? A team with a lot of injuries? A team that doesn't want to pay what Alfonso Soriano would cost? I'm not sure, perhaps I should ask KM.

He came back because he wasn't allowed to play in the Dominican league (which has an affiliation with MLB) while under suspension. Maybe he's still trying to catch on somewhere this season but he has already achieved what he really wanted.

Manny/Thome platoon at 1B, please. If this season is going down in flames, at least we could do it with style.

Hey indignant A's fans-are we still wondering about the Moss call-up because a guy's wife was due with twins?

Jamie Moyer isn't in prison, he's in the Orioles system. And the O's, missing both their opening-day LF and RF, are reduced to playing Endy Chavez, Steve Pearce, and an out-of-position Chris Davis right now. JUST SAYING.

How much did Oakland pay him to serve his suspension and then rehab?
   15. karlmagnus Posted: June 16, 2012 at 09:46 AM (#4158496)
A's are nuts; he was hitting well at Sacramento. Doesn't hit many homers these days but does everything else. Baltimore would be an ideal home -- he and Dan Duquette go way back. We're talking Orioles Pennant Fever!

He can't seriously be much better than replacement level as an outfielder, can he? I can't see why anybody would touch him other than as a publicity move or for sentimental reasons if he came very cheap.

Well, the Phillies do need infield help, and I believe Little O is still kicking around...

reduced to playing Endy Chavez

Chavez is somebody I'll always have a warped impression of because of his brief time with Texas. He was pretty good here last year, playing some highlight-reel CF and hitting .300. In half a season, of course, with quite a track record of mediocrity behind him, and he turned 34 in the offseason; he's about the definition of replacement level.

Jerry Hairston Jr is the opposite. In his brief time in Texas he was apparently the worst player on the planet, but he keeps finding work, and his overall record seems to justify it (at least at the level of useful utilityman). But I will always think of him as a ghastly ballplayer.

Manny Ramirez is no Brandon Moss! The .300 is sort of shiny and all that, but the lack of power and lots of k's to few walks make me think he's cooked. If he can't crack the A's lineup then happy trails to him.

To be fair, who is? The Pirates just weren't patient enough after that trade.

His OPS+ goes to 11.

Too bad, I was looking forward to him joining the A's end of the career club. The team seems to be hitting ok at the moment though

Endy's back on the DL, though Roberts is playing OK so far.

You wouldn't say that if you saw him with his 11 OPS+ this year (up from 8 a few days ago.)

The Reds really need another bat (preferably a lefty, but beggars can't be choosers). The Reds also have the luxury of Drew Stubbs and Jay Bruce in the outfield. Manny wouldn't have to cover much ground in Great American's left field. Chris Heisey is a good late-innings, defensive replacement if necessary. I think the Reds should bandy about. the idea of Manny for the prorated minimum. Maybe I'm crazy though.
   27. Danny Posted: June 16, 2012 at 03:17 PM (#4158659)
I think I'd rather have Manny than Gomes, but oh well.

It's been fun watching Moss do his best 2007 Cust impression (1.314 OPS for Cust through 9 games; 1.310 for Moss). And Kila cleared waivers.

I think of him as almost a star player because of his first year with the Mets. I was living with a Mets fan and we watched a ton of those games and Endy Chavez was always saving games with great catches. Including in the Mets-Cardinals NLCS. At the time it looked like another instance of the Phillies failing to realize they had a great player on their hands.

What do most Oakland fans and media members think of Gomes? When he was in Cincinnati, Dusty hit Gomes behind Votto and a healthy Rolen. Gomes proceeded to rack up RBI with mediocre numbers. It was enough to make him a fan and media favorite. The Brennamen were going so far as to call him a good defender. Rarely have I disliked a player so because of fans and media.

I can think of a team that's in contention, a half-game out of first, despite an utter clusterf*** in left field. Manny would be a huge box office draw there and couldn't possibly be worse than what they're already using in LF.

Make it so.

edit to add: Their left fielders are hitting .179/.272/.258 this season.

That Indians lineup is a weird one. They have a few exciting youngsters and few guys who seemed washed-up years ago. But aside from Lonnie Chisenhall, the young guys are surprisingly not that young (Santana 26, Kipnis 25, Brantley 25, LaPorta 27). And the old guys are surprisingly not that old (Kotchman 29, Hannahan 32, Shelley Duncan 32, Jose Lopez 28!).
   32. The District Attorney Posted: June 16, 2012 at 05:17 PM (#4158787)
Manny to Baltimore or Cleveland seems plausible. He could platoon at DH with Chris Davis/Wilson Betemit or with Travis Hafner, respectively. I really don't think you can play him in the OF, though. (And given the way he's hit lately, entrusting the full-time DH job to him doesn't seem wise either.)

A return to Cleveland would, of course, be cooler.

I like the bat, but not the glove. He seems very, very intense, just GRRRRRRRRRRRR all the time.

Well, right at this moment (3:45pm, 6/16/12) I like Gomes a LOT.
