A’s Jesús Luzardo forced to adapt as a kid. Now his stuff is ‘almost unfair’ -

“Growing up, Jesús wasn’t the biggest kid on the team, he was one of the shorter kids, so he had to develop command and feel for the offspeed,” said Luzardo’s father, who also is named Jesús. “I think that was an advantage for him: He learned to pitch without the advantage of the fastball. And then he got the velocity when he grew. He needed a different approach — a lot of the big kids depended on the fastball and he didn’t have that luxury.”

Luzardo is my favorite pitching prospect right now. Mize is the one that gets most of the attention, but Luzardo has both a better K/9 and a basically equal BB/9 rate. He's also younger and has played at higher levels.

Mackenzie Gore has higher k/9 and higher BB/9 rates. Luzardo's ratio between those two stats is a tick better.

Pearson has the same K/9 and a worse BB/9.

All those guys range between 0.5 and 0.7 HR/9. Pearson is the worst, Luzardo right in the middle. Brendan McKay is better than Luzardo on all three measures. But, eh, I'm still excited about Luzardo. In TFA one of his teammates calls him 'Zeus', which is probably just based on his last name, but I think it's a pretty good nickname all the same.
