Someone more thoughtful can bring me down, but I am excited about this. The A's have addressed one of their major weaknesses without giving up prospects or blocking them. A's have a great looking catching prospect in Sean Murphy who ideally will be ready to take the job in 2019. Now the A's need to sign a starting pitcher or two.

It's hard to be definitive without knowing the money but this is the kind of deal plenty of observers were suggesting for the A's (as well as other rebuilding teams like the Marlins, Pirates and Rays). Sign a vet who isn't going to block a key prospect. Get something positive in the way of on-field contributions (as well as that intangible "clubhouse presence"). If he's playing well, you can always flip him at the deadline to a contender for a couple more prospects.

$6.5M
Even coming off a bad year, Lucroy seems like a significant upgrade at the A's weakest position.
And yes, one of the available starting pitchers would also help.

This seems like a fair deal, especially compared to Moustakas. Lucroy was terrible last year, until he got to Colorado.

Great deal for the A's, go get another starting pitcher and you could be close to a wildcard spot.

Beane ... can't even tank right!

Let's hope this isn't another example of the A's tradition of being the final, miserable stop of a once-fine player.

He was excellent in 2016, though, so one hopes for a rebound. I liked everything I saw about Lucroy in his year in Texas; he kept working hard even as he couldn't seem to hit (or, apparently, to frame pitches?) in '17.

Right. I'm just saying, his awful season justifies the modest salary.

Lynn just signed with the twins for a one year deal at 12 mil.... I think there are probably 20 teams that would have liked to have made that deal.

So this is the new Boras strategy. Hey everyone, let's hold out until the middle of spring training, sign a below market one year deal, hope to have a career year then sign a HUGE multi-year deal in 2019. That'll show 'em!

So that's Lynn, Lucroy, moosetacos and CarGo, what's next Arrieta on 1/15? That JDM deal the Red Sox signed is looking like an overpay! I won't even mention the Hosmer deal....

wouldn't that have led them to offer 1 for 13?
or is the lure of the bright lights in Minnesota and their last two decades of dominance enough to get Lynn to take less to play there?

Lynn has been smoke-and-mirrors anyway, so the Twins might not get as big a bargain as they hope.

Not really... ultimately these one year deals are guys who are comfortable with the signing, meaning they feel they will be given a legitimate shot to be a starter and not moved from the role they envision for themselves, and there are many teams that would try to negotiate a team friendly deal which might have put the player off.

Simply put, I think if you ask all 30 gms...."I have Lance Lynn on the phone right now, and he wants a one year deal at 12 mil, he'll give it to the first team that says yes(and doesn't have a problem with a physical before finalizing the deal)....and I think that at least 20 teams jump at that chance.

Smoke and mirrors? career 3.43 era, 3.64 fip...yep smoke and mirrors. I get that his most recent season is a little overrated, which is probably why he had problems getting offers, but that was still some bit of recovering from TJS...and yet he still managed to lead (tie) the NL in games started last season.
