A’s lose Sean Manaea to shoulder surgery at worst possible time

With just weeks to go before the postseason starts, the Oakland Athletics have lost their best pitcher. Sean Manaea will undergo surgery on his pitching shoulder Sept. 19. A’s manager Bob Melvin doesn’t expect to have Manaea back until after the 2019 season.

Prior to the injury, the 26-year-old Manaea posted a 3.59 ERA over 160 2/3 innings. Manaea initially went on the disabled list in late August due to a shoulder issue. After being examined, doctors determined he would need to have surgery.

The surgery comes at an awful time for the A’s. The team will now lose one of its best pitchers just weeks before the postseason. The Athletics currently hold a 7.5-game lead for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Manaea would have been a candidate to start for the team in the wild-card game.

I would submit that this is very obviously not the "worst possible time."

For example - had this happened at the beginning of the season, the A's would not be headed toward the playoffs.

Manaea was lights out in April and even though he tailed off afterward, he "pitched to the score" and was probably 3-4 wins above replacement pitcher in the first half, looking at the game logs. Actual replacement pitchers that the team ran out were not good.

The A's came from out a big hole to chase down the Mariners for the second wild card and threaten the Astros in the division. Another 4-5 games in the hole (one of the games a replacement pitcher would probably have lost was a 2-1 victory at Seattle that would be a 2 game swing) is probably too far buried and they would have punted instead of going for it at the trade deadline (or earlier).

I'm not so sure. They could have just signed Edwin Jackson a little earlier. Seems like every has-been, never-was, and cast-off they throw into the rotation pitches great. I assume the same would have happened with anyone they replaced Manaea with.

Tyler Chatwood is available.

Bartolo Colon would be a huge acquisition for the A's.

Totally agree. Didn't even need to finish reading your sentence. 6 words in and you had me.

Pretty remarkable. Manaea, Puk, Cotton and Graveman would have been their four best pitchers not named Treinen.

Seems like every has-been, never-was, and cast-off they throw into the rotation pitches great. I assume the same would have happened with anyone they replaced Manaea with.

This is offset, of course, by the mandatory mediocrity of any participants in the Oakland A's Farewell Tour for the Formerly Great Hitter.

Whenever I see the phrase "worst possible time" I immediately think of the "Darren Gets Married" thread.

Good times.

#6: Rickey has been seen in the dugout, perhaps pondering whether to ask in if the last game doesn't have any playoff implications...
Actually, the Big Hurt rocked in green and gold, but some of the others from Billy Williams to Joe Morgan weren't doing much for their HOF resumes but padding counting stats.
