A’s promote Bobby Crosby in series of player development staff moves

The A’s are making some moves this offseason. But before they make a series of roster moves to their major league club, they’ve been keeping busy with the upcoming player development staff.

The team announced Tuesday some new and old faces will join the organization in a variety of roles.

The A’s have promoted former shortstop Bobby Crosby to manager of the High-A affiliate Stockton Ports. Crosby served as a coach for Double-A Midland last season.

Well, this answers the question as for whatever became of Bobby Crosby….

Besides Crosby and now Adam Rosales, other former Oakland shortstops who coached in MLB after their playing days are Mike Gallego, Walt Weiss, Mike Bordick. Cliff Pennington is a college coach. I would not be surprised to see Marco Scutaro on the sidelines somewhere.

Whither Rob Picciolo?

Whither Rob Picciolo?

He passed away in January 2018.

Well, cross him off the list, then.

Alfredo Griffin is probably too scared of Vlad's bounty hunters to do something as public as coaching.

The anti-death prejudice on this site is getting pretty tiresome.

The line is simply "Cross him off, then".

Dammit. I almost looked it up to make sure I had it right, but I was lazy.

Picciolo didn't walk much, and he was intentionally walked exactly once in his career. The White Sox chose to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game by walking Picciolo in this game, and faced a hitter who ended up with 113 more WAR than Peach had.

Who, it appears, promptly drove in the winning run.

And the walk to face a future Hall of Famer was ordered by a future Hall of Fame manager, though both he and Rickey! were still pretty wet behind the ears at the time.

I was surprised the link wasn't the game where the runner before Rickey! was walked to clog the bases to avoid giving up the record-breaking steal, then the runner wandered off the base to clear second again. Maybe that was Chicken Stanley, who also was a pro coach. I'll let someone else find that game, I think I watched the farce on TV.
