A’s reportedly acquire OF Stephen Piscotty

The A’s reached an agreement to acquire outfielder Stephen Piscotty from the Cardinals for two Minor Leaguers, sources confirmed to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman late Wednesday night.

Other than it being a pretty righty-heavy lineup, I'm liking how the Birds are stacking up:

3b-Gyorko (R)
(I might bat Molina 8th so he doesn't clog the bases in front of Wong)

Or if Jose Martinez (.900 OPS in 300 pa) starts at 1b, Carpenter can play 3b
1b-J Martinez(R)

This second lineup will put up a shitload of runs, assuming DeJong doesn't pull an Aledmys Diaz for 2018.

Future moves notwithstanding, the bench includes Grichuk, Gyorko/Martinez, Carson Kelly, and maybe Harrison Bader.

I'm still higher on Piscotty than most. Hopefully this is more than just a salary dump. Slussman reports Schrock and Munoz, which does not impress, but the deal still isn't done so maybe the Cardinals are holding out for a reliever.

It's good that it gets Piscotty close to his mom, though, which I hope the other players take note of; it's one of those intangible things that a good front office does.

Edit: Done deal, the issue was concerns about Piscotty's physical, which the Cardinals may send money to make whole. So, uh, who knows.

According to some sources, the Cardinals traded Piscotty mostly to let him be closer to his mother who was diagnosed with ALS last season, and was the reason he left the team. The team wasn't trying to rake the A's over a barrel on this deal, but if that is the case, they probably should have worked with them to give Piscotty some type of assurance he wouldn't be flipped immediately(or soon)

The A's aren't going to flip Piscotty. He checks off multiple boxes for them. They were looking for a RHH outfielder who would improve their defense and their OBP, who is cost-controlled that they could acquire without losing top 10 prospects.

He's basically giving them a right-handed Reddick. Piscotty's likely floor is league average but he's still got upside. The A's have already massively improved their outfield defense by moving Khris Davis to DH and adding Fowler/Powell in CF. Piscotty helps complete that equation.

If I squint I can see the A's playing .500 this year even contending for the wild card. They really needed to improve the defense and they have as Hecubot says. I liked Healy, and I liked how Khris Davis was trying to best The Creature, but these moves make a lot of sense. Which I can't always say about the A's offseason moves (Billy Butler?).

I get all of that, but Beane is not the type to let sentimentality(or even basic business sense) to interfere with his desire to maintain the image that he is the face of the franchise.... so if Piscotty starts putting up a 130 ops+ season and being cost controlled, it seems like he's the perfect guy Beane would trade for some third tier minor leaguers who cost nothing.
