A’s set sights on division after another wild-card loss

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Manager Bob Melvin knows the Oakland Athletics might need to find a way to win the AL West to guarantee themselves a long playoff series.

Pulling past the powerful Astros is the next aim for the A’s, daunting as it might be.

Two straight AL wild-card losses following 97-win seasons have left the A’s going into the offseason again wondering what it will take to finally get over the hump in a tough division dominated by Houston the past three years. Oakland has lost nine straight winner-take-all games since 2000 after a 5-1 defeat to the Rays on Wednesday night with Tampa Bay getting to Sean Manaea from the start.

The A’s were playing at home this time, a far different scenario from the 7-2 loss at Yankee Stadium in the 2018 wild-card game.

Mind you, if this century has meant anything, winning the division may be only a minor improvement in terms of overall playoff results…..

At first glance, I can't say I like their chances. Looks like a reasonably solid core with Chapman, Olson and maybe Semien and Laureano but the rest of the offense looks weak. A bounceback from Davis would help obviously. And the pitching staff is positively ancient and got good healthys seasons out of Fiers and, I can't believe this, Brett Anderson. 13 pitchers gave them 50+ innings and 10 of them were 29+, 4 of those 33+.

Why don't they just skip to winning the pennant and cut out the middleman???

Well, they should have Jesús Luzardo (22) and A.J. Puk (24) entering the rotation next season.

Current streaks in winner-take-all games:

5 wins: Giants
3 wins: Tigers
2 wins: Angels, Astros, Blue Jays, Mariners, Marlins, Rays
1 win: Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Nationals, Padres, Rockies, Royals, Yankees
1 loss: Cubs, Mets, Red Sox, Twins
2 losses: Brewers, Orioles, Phillies, Reds
3 losses: Pirates, Rangers
4 losses: Braves
7 losses: Indians
9 losses: Athletics

The White Sox have never played a winner-take-all game in their 11 playoff series and are the only team not to win at least one, the Mariners, Marlins and Padres have also never lost a winner-take-all game. If every team had at least 9 winner-take-all games there is a 5.7% chance that at least one would be on a nine game losing streak if every game was a coin flip.

A.J. Puk

Stupid question: is that said as "Puck", "Pook", "Puke", or "Pyook"? Wikipedia doesn't say and I haven't heard it said.

9 losses: Athletics
This is crazy.

They have also lost 8 of 9 playoff series (cherry-picked starting point - but doesn't include the 3 wild card game losses). Their only playoff series win since Bush Senior was president was against the Twins; and the only Twins playoff series win in that time period was naturally against the A's.
