A’s trade for Kendrys Morales |

The A’s have acquired infielder Kendrys Morales and cash from the Blue Jays in exchange for Minor League infielder Jesus Lopez and international slot money. Right-hander Jharel Cotton has been placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Morales on Oakland’s roster.

Technically an infielder. Since 2012, he has logged 114 appearances at 1B. And one at pitcher.

Is he going to play 1B? They already have Khris Davis and Robbie Grossman for DH.

Kendrys Morales played in 130 games last year.

He hit .146/.239/.260 in his first 30 games.
He hit .281/.359/.492 in his next 100 games.

Here’s hoping Oakland gets the second guy!

Morales, 35, is expected to play first base while Gold Glover Matt Olson recovers from a broken hamate bone in his right hand. Olson was injured Thursday in the second game of the team's season-opening series against the Seattle Mariners in Japan. He had surgery the following day, and the team didn't provide a timeline for his return, although he is expected to be out for at least a month or two.

It was sort of inevitable that Kendrys Morales would end up on the A's, isn't it?

If Olson can't come back in good order then hopefully Morales is useful. If Olson does come back and Morales has been useful then they can trade Morales for something slightly better than a single-A utility infielder -- maybe a double-A utility infielder! If Morales is useless then they've only lost a single-A utility infielder, some slot money, and $2 million in salary.

Classic "it's better than straight up releasing him" trade for the Jays.

They could have signed him instead of Billy Butler in 2014, a guy whose vacancy in the KC lineup was filled by Kendrys. So yes, this probably was inevitable.

That was a terrible signing by the Jays. They completely misread the market and jumped the gun early to get Morales, in an offseason in which 1B/corner outfielders/DH could not find jobs. Plus, he's not very good.

If Olson can't come back in good order

Don't hamate breaks typically rob power for a year? He may be fine to play, but I could see Olson being pretty limited offensively this year.

Don't jump onto home plate if you hit a walkoff Kendrys.
