A’s will let Trevor Plouffe go to make room for Matt Chapman

With top prospect Matt Chapman set to be officially called up on Thursday, the A’s are preparing to designate third baseman Trevor Plouffe for assignment, The Chronicle has learned.
Plouffe, signed to a one-year, $5.25 million deal during the offseason, is batting .214 with seven homers and 14 RBIs and six errors in 58 games and his playing time had been diminished the past two weeks. He started just one game on the team’s just-completed road trip to Tampa Bay and Miami.

Today is Plouffe's birthday.

He might get to unwrap a starting 3B job for the Red Sox.

Plouffe went from useful to good to useful to lousy in a short span. I guess that's pretty par for the course for a guy who becomes a starter at age 26.

Career .190/.286/.310 at Fenway (11 games), but .304/.339/.536 at Yankee Stadium (15 games). Boston needs to get him to block the Yankees, quick!

Not if Jhonny Peralta beats him to it.

Not that it really matters but this does seem an odd move for a team as under-talented as the A's. I assume they've already made a quick offer of him around the league and found no real interest.

Not a good tour through FA for the A's. I get $35.7 M for 0.5 WAR (so far) which is basically all Ryan Madson.

Worst case scenario he gets to spend more time with his wife Olivia.

(and I swear this is not a photo of Madeline Albright...)

Why not keep him around during the Yankees series? As I recall, Plouffe is a Yankee-killer.

Her and $20M in career earnings really make it very, very hard to feel sorry for the guy.

Update:

The Rays have acquired infielder Trevor Plouffe from the Athletics for cash considerations or a player to be named later, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes (Twitter links). The Rays will also receive cash in the deal, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets, with Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle adding that the Rays will receive over $2MM to cover a portion of the approximately $3MM left on Plouffe’s $5.25MM 2017 salary.

The Rays show the A's how to run a low-cost operation.

Godspeed, Mr. Plouffe. You will be missed. (Not so much for his baseball ability. I just like the guy.)
