The good news is that the Mets can't lose again until Friday.

EDIT: Now watch deGrom blow his elbow out in the game.

This Mariners collapse is going to be so fun. They were printing playoff tickets in early July for a team with a RD in the teens. Good one. RD is now -3, still 19 over .500 tho! .500 ball gets them 91 wins, probably enough for the 2nd WC. Thing is, without Cano and with the rotation falling back to earth with a thud (and now Paxton on the DL) I'm not sure this is a .500 team.

Nice to finally see Dee Gordon getting some grief for being a completely mediocre player as well. He's barely above replacement level and he's been talked about a times like an MVP out here.

Is it just me, or does it look like that AL lineup would go about 158-4 against the NL lineup over a full season?

Hey, c'mon now ... we're better at C and 1B and hold our own at DH and ... ummm ... we have 3 OFs.

Yankees finally join now-established trend of MLB ballpark passes and selling tickets on a subscription model. $49.99 for standing-room access to all August home games. Only 2000 passes available. Move follows recent NYS ticket law changes relaxing requirement of paper tix option

As good a time as any to update:

NL leads AL 102-85 with a +48 differential

ALC 23-45 (playing NLC)
ALE 36-34 (playing NLE)
ALW 26-23 (playing NLW)

ALC also 39-55 vs ALE and 41-86 bs ALW. KC is 13-47 outside of the ALC.
ALE is 60-59 vs ALE

NLC is 49-52 vs NLE and 49-48 vs NLW
NLE if 53-65 vs NLW (but Atl and Phil plenty to play)

So the AL Central stinks and the other 5 divisions seem pretty evenly matched overall. The AL is much more top-heavy of course and the top 3 teams are 21-10 vs the NL (no idea who they've played yet). The Red Sox and Yanks are 36-16 vs the ALW. Meanwhile, make no mistake, the O's, Royals and White Sox are very, very bad teams and the Tigers are catching up.

Kemp and Markakis are starting?

Hot starts, lots of fans and ... NL OF is a pretty sorry patch. Cain should obviously be starting (leads NL in WARpos) but Markakis (#10) is the only other OF in the top 10 in the NL. Looks like Starling Marte would be next at #19 but he has the drug suspension so we can't have him desecrating the sacred All-Star field. Next up is your pick of Yelich, Harrison Bader, Corey Dickerson, Brandon Nimmo or David Peralta. Can I interest you in a Albert Almora?

So it's a group which is steeped in neither history nor current glory.

Huh, just noticed that Starlin Castro is having a nice little career peak. He put up 2 WAR last year at 27 but that was in just 2/3 of a season; this year he's at 2.5 WAR already. There should be some trade chatter about him, he'd certainly help the Red Sox, Indians, DBacks and Dodgers.

If Castro rebounds to become a useful everyday player again, he's going to be the next potential test case in the "will a guy who gets to 3000 hits but has nothing else to offer get into the HoF" debate.

At his 2018 pace, assuming he doesn't get hurt, he would have around 1800 hits by the end of his age 30 season. That's ahead of the pace of the majority of guys who ended up getting to 3000 for their careers (and in some cases well ahead).

But he doesn't walk, doesn't run, has mediocre power, and an average at best glove.

If he actually gets to 3000, he'll be the first guy offering nothing else to do it. I'd guess he won't get close enough to even seriously have the discussion.

I was surprised to learn that Markakis had never before been selected. He's had a nice career with a single very good season -- in 2008, he was first in the AL in WAR, albeit leapfrogging a number of better hitters with some questionable D numbers -- surrounded by solid to solid plus years. Seems like a guy who would have a few appearances.

There still exists the possibility of a strike by Metrorail and Metrobus operators, but it is looking less likely at this hour. There might be some brinkmanship that changes things at the last minute, so this could get ugly in a hurry. They voted to authorize a strike yesterday afternoon.

Less than an hour after a press release today decrying WMATA's trouncing all over their C.B.A., the union spokeswoman sent out another press release:

"ATU Local 689 has accepted a meeting with Paul Wiedefeld's designees tomorrow (Tuesday). Our union is prepared to sit down and have a genuine conversation about the issues that got us to this point.

It is not our intention to disrupt the MLB All-Star game, and we would hope that WMATA shares our desire to talk in good faith and will not use this meeting as a stop-gap to get through the big day.”

Ok, so Harper is going to win this Homeruny Derby by a landslide ?! I know only half the contestants. Seems totally boring.
Especially Freeman and Schwarber. I don't even remotely want to see those guys on a baseball field, let alone at the HRderb !

All the 1st rounders should hit simultaneously. This would speed up the whole thing and be enormously entertaining.

The StatCast on ESPNNews is a big fail so far. Couldn't get the data loaded properly for both hitters. Their system seems to get confused when there are a few homers in a row.

I officially hate Max muncy now. Javy has talked before about being ambidextrous, it's one of the reasons he claims he's good at tagging. Doesn't mean he can hit that way, but I want to see it.

I have been thinking about this scenario for the last week, so I figured I'd ask. Is there a rule in place to cover a situation where a player is selected or elected to the All Star Game, but is traded to a team in the other league between his selection and the game itself?

Manny Machado is the obvious inspiration. He was elected to represent the American League at shortstop in the game, but what happens if he is traded to the Dodgers or Phillies on the Monday before the game? Is there a rule to cover this, or would the commissioner's office have to make a ruling of some sort?

I think the rule is you play in the laundry of your current team. The Reds traded Jeff Shaw to LA right before the ASG in 1998. That ASG was the first time Shaw wore the Dodger uni. I don't know how this would affect the roster decisions if the trade is to the other league.

Over the weekend I heard a few talking heads do their ideal lineups for the game, and more than a couple had Baez leading off. I was thinking, 'no way!' Then damned if the official lineup doesn't have him leading off! I know Sale is a lefty and the strategy of getting righty bats stuck in front, but just never thought of him batting leadoff in a GAME, let alone an all-star game!

This happened to Jeff Samardzija in 2014. He was selected to the NL team representing the Cubs but was traded to the Oakland A's (for Addison Russell). I think the decision was that Samardzija could go to the game but he wasn't eligible to play in it. I don't recall which dugout he sat in (if either).

Follow-up to #63: This article says he was introduced with the NL All-Stars but has a photo of him showing him wearing "an awful generic cap and National League All-Star jersey". The article also confirms that he was ruled ineligible to actually play in the game.

an awful generic cap
Only the third most awful thing on his head, though, behind the hair and goatee. That said, making a player ineligible because he got traded seems like an unfair punishment (to the extent that players are honored and care about playing in the ASG).

Javy has pretty big splits in his career (less so this year, but a .342 OBP vs LHP in his career), and has hit leadoff against LHP a handful of times for the Cubs, but only twice this year with his power explosion.

I mean, it's a 1-game exhibition so a leadoff home run puts your team up by 1 run immediately, if not sooner. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, those scrubs hitting behind him might not even get on base so what's the point of hitting him 4th??

Historical trivia note: If the AL wins tonight, this will be the first time since before the 1964 game that they've had an overall lead in the series, 44-43-2. Just 30 years ago, before the 1988 game, the NL was 17 games ahead.

Ok, so last minute BETTS: I just put $20 on the AL !

Very confident.

makes sense, the Dodgers are trying to win, trading away anybody on their 25 man isn't ideal.

does the game still matter? I honestly cannot remember.

I just hope my best buddy, Brandon Crawford, doesn't screw up my bet with 20 awesome throws and one lonely last inning homerun.

Don't do it Bran ! Please take a flight in an eagle instead. Go be a wolf, and run free and wild !

Do medal of honor winners really need more adulation?

I hate that whole military crap. Stop it already.

It's 2018. The military is the sacred American cow.

Hey, that was an actual good choir! I missed, however, who it was; did anyone hear who they were, who was performing?

Twas the choir of defeated National Leaguers.

My punishment for being the worst mets fan in existence and abandoning the team after April is to stick with this all-star game until the end. I will also return to proper fandom following.

The choir was a group of DC area choirs. A friend of mine was singing out in RF with her UU choir of about 30 folks. I missed it unfortunately. Was busy shredding chicken.

I guess I'm going to have to wait for the highlight film to figure out who that choir was.

Oh and a political reference, JFC, just stick to baseball.

Random curmudgeonly thoughts:

1. Best National Anthem rendition on national TV in a long time

2. Instead of military flyovers and honoring 29 Medal of Honor winners, why not have each team set aside 2000 reasonably good seats for each game and let uniformed military personnel sit in them with no admission charge? Is it because it might actually cost the teams some money, and would deprive them all that pre-game free publicity?

3. There should be a gunpoint-enforced LAW requiring the prior posting of the exact time of the first pitch of any nationally televised game.

Thank you. They did a great job. Wait, a Unitarian Universalist choir? That's doubly impressive, their rep is usually.... ok.

That pitch was very high.
   94. Lassus Posted: July 17, 2018 at 08:27 PM (#5711598)
(I mean, subjectively, I didn't actually love the arrangement, but the performance was top-notch.)

One of quite a few choirs. I guess there was 400 people on the field. Though, like I said, I actually missed it. Bad Friend.

Yeah, Unitarian. Rumor has it, some of the younger, more headstrong members were going to kneel. I think they spent as much time hashing that out as they did rehearsing. And they spent a long time rehearsing.

That was a lovely anthem, I'll agree with #94 that I didn't agree with everything in the arrangement, but overall it was just beautiful.

Scherzer is dealing. Great energy so far.

[edit] as I typed that ... walk, then single

The next person to type 'choir' here, will have to sing REO Speedwagon's 'Can't fight this feeling' by herself or himself.

Think, before you type !

Scherzer vs. Trout was fantastic.
