ASK BA: Can A Team Promise Otani A Lucrative Extension? | BaseballAmerica.com

The CBA says, “The Commissioner may impose strict penalties on any Club that attempts to circumvent the system.” What exactly would the Commissioner do? Loss of pick(s)? Fine? Spanking? Would any team blow through the cap to sign Otani?

The fact that Otani is going to be so underpaid for his first year makes it even more likely that he'll accept only an offer where he at least gets to try to be a two way player.

Void the contract, and place Otani on the restricted list.

Or if it's the Red Sox, give them a very stern warning.

Manfred would be willing to consider anything from a slap on the wrist to nuclear annihilation.

If Otani is as good as reported, or even reasonably close, he's going to get a very nice second contract. MLB would look foolish if they try to micromanage when that happens. The better he is, the more sense it makes to extend him.

Unless he blows him arm out after 3 seasons.

Sure, they could promise, though maybe not out loud, but such promises mean nothing in the pro sports business.

Or if it's the Yankees, suspend him but don't hear his appeal until after his career is over.

I'd like to suggest here that Ohtani is making a sound choice here, even if you consider ONLY financial considerations. It's a very risk-averse choice, but it's reasonable. $10MM or so guaranteed with a shot at making it more like $70-80MM, vs. risking that $10MM for a chance of possibly upping that to $200MM in a couple years. As a pitcher coming from the Japanese system, it's a decent choice.

Darren, wouldn't his guaranteed mlb money be less than $10m? Also, wouldnt he have guaranteed money in japan for 2018 if he stayed?

Golly it would be nice if he could offer his services at a fair market price given this sword of Damocles hanging over his career. But let's keep the risk where it belongs - with the sweaty jocks.

Yeah, Otani is making something like $5-6M p.a. in Japan. He'd make just as much in 2017-18 in Japan, as his whole MLB signing bonus, and his two years on minimum salary. So, he's risking virtually nothing by staying in Japan.

He's trading $10-12M with a chance of signing for $200M in 2 years if he stays healthy for $10-12M and the chance of signing for $100M in one year if he stays healthy. That seems like a bad trade, unless he's already hurt.

Darre, no team has the room to sign him for that much last I saw his max bonus would be under 4 mil.

Bud Selig: "It's better to be old...I mean really, really old...and prevent great young players from being Yankees. Now hold my Metamucil, I've got some new ideas on how to stick it to the Nips."

Don't know. But, from purely financial point of view, it's really dumb.

On the bright side, Otani will be such a bargain that he can make playing both ways a pre-requisitie of signing.

I assume he wants to play in the best league and like most (all?) players he is not expecting his earnings to be at risk. He'll come over, be awesome, then sign a zillion dollar extension.

For all we know this guy signs over 98% of his paycheck to his parents. He comes from a very different culture.
