Astros: New GM could be hired soon

Stay by the phone, Herman Franks…stay by the phone.

The Astros could have a new general manager in place in less than one week.

Club owner Drayton McLane said on Sunday prior to the Astros’ series finale with the Pirates that the Astros could introduce a new GM “by next weekend or somewhere around there.”

“We’re going to do some more interviewing and hopefully we’ll have something productive done by the end of the week,” McLane said. “But that’s not a deadline. We’re going to wait until we find the right person. We’re going to re-interview several candidates.”

It seems pretty stupid to hire a GM before you know who else is going to be fired, and who in contending teams' front offices might want to wait until after the season to express interest.

I want to believe that if I were in a position of power, I wouldn't hire people just because they sucked up to me, but I'm not sure if I'd really do that. Thankfully the world will never know.

I hired an assistant a few years ago. I hired the person who I thought was the smartest and most capable, even though many of his opinions differed from mine. He left after two years and left me thinking the he was an idiot who caused quite a bit of damage and that I would have to think twice before hiring a smart, opinionated person again. So there are two sides (at least) to every story.
