Astros Announce First Pitch Participants Ahead of World Series Game 1

Before the Astros officially kick off the final chapter of their march to a second World Series title in three years, they’re bringing back a few old friends.

As Gerrit Cole prepares to stride to the mound and take down the Nationals, he’ll have two trusted friends—and the baddest man in the NFL—to keep it warm.

Evan Gattis will squat behind the plate one more time at Minute Maid, and will surely call for a curveball from…Brian McCann.

We’ve been discussing in another thread who the National should have do this honor- here’s who the Astros are employing in Game 1 for comparative purposes.

Of course the Astros have been here already. I assume the old Astros legends got the honor the first time around so no need to repeat it. Anybody know who threw out first pitches last time? That might be a better "guide" for the Nationals.

Game 3 - J.J. Watt
Game 4 - Hailey Dawson
Game 5 - George W. Bush

The Dodgers had:

Game 1 - Rachel, Sharon, and David Robinson
Game 2 - Fernando Valenzuela
Game 6 - Orel Hershiser and Tommy Lasorda
Game 7 - Sandy Koufax

So the Dodgers went with team legends (Steve Yeager, Don Newcombe, Rick Monday, Steve Garvey, and Vin Scully also participated). The Astros did have Craig Biggio bring Watt the ball.

Later in the series Nolan Ryan will throw out the first pitch, and impress with enough velocity that the Astros dig out an obscure roster exception rule for HOF living legends and put him in the bullpen. He'll later finish the game with a 2 inning save, becoming the first and only pitcher to ever do so in multiple world series 50 years apart.

Is Jeff Bagwell capable of throwing a first pitch?

When he was forced to retire his shoulder was so bad he couldn't throw at all, to the point where a runner from second could score on a ground out to short. Hopefully he's been able to recover to the point where he can play catch with his kids or throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

I wish J.R. Richard would get his due. I know he and the Astros' organization haven't had the best relationship since his career came to an untimely end -- I was just hoping the Crane ownership would try to mend fences with the best pitcher the franchise has ever developed. The man was a beast on the mound -- a black, righthanded Randy Johnson.

5 - To each his own but I adore a good first pitch ceremony. There is something wonderful when it is done right.

On the subject of pregame intros, the Astros have music playing which drowns out the crowd a bit. I don’t like that.
