Astros closer Ken Giles falters in Game 4 of World Series, says he ‘let the team down’ | USAT

Giles was fantastic in the regular season, pitching to a 2.30 ERA and converting 34 of 38 save opportunities.

However, it’s been a different story in the playoffs. After being charged with three runs and not getting an out in Game 4, Giles’ postseason ERA rose to 11.74.

Giles has given up runs in six of his seven postseason appearances this month. That’s not good.

What are the chances he pitches in a close game the rest of the way? If a game goes 12 innings or something that’s one thing but at this point how much can Hinch trust him? He’s a good pitcher, I’d assume this is something mechanical that needs a pretty minor tweak but I can’t imagine that can get dealt with right now.

The only way Giles sees the mound for the rest of the World Series is if there is a catastrophic virus that wipes out the bullpen in the middle of the game....or the Astros are trailing by 6+ runs in the 9th inning.

"They" meaning the Astros? They're not anymore. Hinch has come out and said that Giles is no longer closing.

Ach, Giles gave up one run in July. He gave up one run in August. He gave up two runs in September. And then 12 in October. Things happen. I’m not sure anyone knew the magic moment to give up on him.
