Astros’ Gerrit Cole Strikes Out 16 in One-Hit Shutout of Diamondbacks

Gerrit Cole struck out a career-high 16 in a one-hitter and the Houston Astros routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 8–0 Friday night.

Cole (3–1) topped the strikeout mark of 14 he set three weeks ago against Texas and allowed only a one-out double to Chris Owings in the fifth inning of his second career complete game. The only other baserunner against the dominant right-hander was David Peralta, who walked to lead off the fourth.

Now that he's given the Astros a spin, hope he can stick with them.

They’re obviously cheating, right?

By the end of the season we will be wondering how a pitcher managed to only get 16 strikeouts in a game.

I'm glad they stuck with Cole for the whole game. It would've tarred the memory of his outing if some tacky reliever had finished it. I pine for the days when pitchers finished their work; short starts just don't resin-ate with me.

How could that go unrecognized for more than twelve hours?

I was trying to forget it. Fortunately the D Backs players did. They took the next two games from the World Series champions
