HOW WILL THE CUBS NOT PLAY TODAY?

Snowing still this morning in Utica.

HOW WILL THE REDS GET SHUTOUT TODAY?

Oh, they aren't playing today? Three straight days without a run scored!

Can't wait for the 2017 season. The Phillies are going to suck, but even if the prospects develop slowly, these guys like Michael Saunders and Clay Buchholz should make it better than last season - and then get traded for more prospects!

HOW WILL THE CUBS NOT PLAY TODAY?

There was some snow on the ground this morning, but it's already warming up.

Unless you're asking if the pitching or offense will show up today, and who knows?

The Cubs hit Colorado tomorrow, and the forecast for Denver calls for rain and the low 50s both Friday and Saturday. But hey, it's supposed to be beautiful on Sunday.
   14. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:29 PM (#5656598)
Cubs should have been out of that inning - Baez rushed the throw to 3rd to double off someguy and threw it away.
   15. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:34 PM (#5656603)
Javy, javy, javy. Dude is on fire, and no singles here.
   16. Meatwad Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:41 PM (#5656609)
I like the idea of javy batting ahead of kb and rizzo, i think he will see better pitches because of it.
   17. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:42 PM (#5656612)
It's fine when he's hitting, it just also can look bad when he's swinging and missing at everything - and the change to that usually is so sudden.
   18. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:43 PM (#5656615)
Making the kid work today, this is that good offense.
   19. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 02:58 PM (#5656625)
Lester is a baby-man who might need his diaper changed.

He's been complaining to anyone who'll listen about not getting all 8 warmup pitches because he's slow and takes too long.
   20. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 03:01 PM (#5656626)
Javy is slumping - just a single...
   21. Chris Fluit Posted: April 19, 2018 at 03:06 PM (#5656630)
So are you predicting that the Blue Jays and Pirates will run out of relievers, forcing the commissioner to declare a tie for the first time since the infamous all star game?
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2018 at 03:19 PM (#5656635)
bad news cubs.... on that play, but with a 6-1 lead they can make a few mistakes.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:07 PM (#5656678)
Cubs up only 8-1, Cardinals finally got a hit in the fifth inning. And it wasn't like Lester was pitching particularly well, just the Cardinals were hitting them where they were at.
   24. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:07 PM (#5656679)
It's not your day when Heyward homers against you.
   25. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:17 PM (#5656686)
I guess the pen is pretty rested, but I'd also think about just letting Lester keep pitching.

EDIT: Butler is warming, so I'm guess he's coming in.
   26. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:23 PM (#5656690)
Rizzo should have let that hit him, or Bryant is going to pull away in the HBP category (now 6 for KB, 4 for Rizzo).
   27. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:29 PM (#5656695)
Jason Heyward put up a 131 OPS+ in his age-20 season. I thought he was going to be Trout-level superstar, inner circle HOF potential. He has a 100 OPS+ since then. Baseball is funny.
   28. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:32 PM (#5656699)
Even that's too generous to him, he has a 75 OPS+ with the Cubs so far.
   29. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:41 PM (#5656704)
Uh, Butler...
   30. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:43 PM (#5656707)
This is 2017 Butler.
   31. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:49 PM (#5656716)
Baez's defense has been getting worse as his bat has been getting better (meaning this particular streak, I'm not saying overall).
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2018 at 04:50 PM (#5656717)
Cubs bullpen making this game interesting (and Baez)
   33. Walt Davis Posted: April 19, 2018 at 05:03 PM (#5656723)
So have the Cards "officially" moved Holland out of the closer spot or are they going with "missing ST, he needs some innings first"?
   34. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 05:05 PM (#5656724)
The Cubs played the long game with Holland there, trying to get the Cards to move him into higher leverage spots. Right?
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: April 19, 2018 at 05:08 PM (#5656726)

Norris is currently "The closer"...but the team has more or less stated that when Holland starts showing sharpness again, he'll get the job back.

Holland seemed to be fine with the decision, so that at least alleviates some potential tension (and there was talk about sending Holland to the minors for another 10 days or so of seasoning, but that would require Holland's permission....)
   36. Baldrick Posted: April 19, 2018 at 05:09 PM (#5656728)
As a Holland owner in my fantasy league, he's definitely not expected to close soon, but the plan is still for him to be the closer once he's ready. Presumably, if Norris continues to do well, 'when he's ready' can be slid back quite a ways. Even if he's pitching well a month from now, they might just continue with the status quo until Norris has a bad stretch.
   37. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: April 19, 2018 at 05:12 PM (#5656729)
So, cfb, what's the Cards plan with Hicks? Is he going to be a starter or are they grooming him into future closer? His stuff was super impressive the other night.

Er, I don't think fantasy owners have that level of decision-making authority.

From what it sounds like, the plan is to make him a reliever for a couple of years... or at least this year. I don't think they were sold on him as a starter and see him more in the vein of a Rosenthal type of pitcher...although he has better command in my opinion.

Not too funny if you're paying him $184 million. He did that stint with the Cardinals and they sprinkled on that fairy dust that they have and fooled everyone into thinking his bat was going to be nearly as good as his glove.

Time to beat up on the White Flight Barves!

And/or DOOOMED, but last night was pretty sweet.
   43. Lassus Posted: April 19, 2018 at 07:46 PM (#5656790)
OK, Harvey looks bad, but the corpse of Adrian Gonzalez having no range at all cost us there.

Harvey has no shot against Freeman.

Matt "batting practice machine" Harvey.

TOR@NYY

This interminable winter continues. I hope the Jays auction off some of these game-used snowmobile masks. Kevin Pillar, Aledmys Diaz, Teoscar Hernandez, etc. I can probably use them on the skidoo into May, and while running into June. And then maybe for bug deflection in August.
   48. Lassus Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:21 PM (#5656802)
This game is pretty torturous to watch.
   49. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:24 PM (#5656805)
How many more starts does Harvey get? He's cooked.
   50. Lassus Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:25 PM (#5656806)
It may be time for Harvey to come out of this game.

In Harvey's (minor - it shouldn't have been hit that hard) defense, Frazier should have had that.
   51. Lassus Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:27 PM (#5656807)
I admit I feel pretty sorry for Harvey.
   52. Davo and his Moose Tacos Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:29 PM (#5656808)
# OF HOMERS IN THEYR LAST 240 PAs

Mike Trout: 16
Giancarlo Stanton: 18
Aaron Judge: 18
Kurt Suzuki: 19
   53. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 19, 2018 at 08:42 PM (#5656811)
It may be time for Harvey to come out of this game.

And probably out of the rotation. The question is what to do with him? He's got an option left but he'd have to accept the demotion because of service time. Either way, if it were up to me, this would be his last start.

I feel bad for Harvey because it is hard to struggle in the public's eye but he's also made about 20 million. If his career is nearing its end, he's made a lot of money and still has his health.

He's also a pitcher so he could rebound and have a second act to his career.

Judge is now tied with fellow second year player Paul Dejong for 5 homeruns this season.
   57. Lassus Posted: April 19, 2018 at 09:09 PM (#5656824)
Either way, if it were up to me, this would be his last start.

Hard to argue.

Regardless, I feel a storm coming in the next 20 games that I hope we can weather.

   59. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: April 19, 2018 at 09:44 PM (#5656856)
Yanks sure as hell needed that one, and it's nice to see Chapman not cause too much agita. But that horrible call he got on Travis that made the count 2-2 instead of 3-1 was what seemed to settle him down and turn the inning around.

And Judge. What can you say? He's looking better and better every week.
   60. Davo and his Moose Tacos Posted: April 19, 2018 at 09:58 PM (#5656862)
Kurt Suzuki's last 250 plate appearances:

.313/.370/.608. 19 homers, 10 doubles, 13 walks, 26 Ks.

For Kurt Suzuki. 34-year-old, shitty player Kurt Suzuki. The Kurt Suzuki who hit 19 total home runs from 2012 through 2015 (1740 plate appearances!)

Kurt Suzuki.
   61. Jay Seaver Posted: April 19, 2018 at 10:09 PM (#5656868)
Mookie Betts is freaking ridiculous. The Angels are going to have a complex.

Brandon Nimmo has a .517 OBP and has looked good at the plate. They need to find a way to get him some more PT.
   63. Dillon Gee Escape Plan Posted: April 19, 2018 at 10:24 PM (#5656877)
Home plate ump Jerry Layne took a Trout foul ball off the forearm and had to leave the Sox-Angels game.
   64. Jay Seaver Posted: April 19, 2018 at 10:29 PM (#5656879)
... and, let me tell you, it is not great for those of us who are worn out from staying up for two west coast cames already.
   65. Jay Seaver Posted: April 19, 2018 at 10:32 PM (#5656881)
Give Trout credit, it takes something like fifteen minutes to strike him out!
   66. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: April 19, 2018 at 11:17 PM (#5656904)
10 strikeouts for Arrieta. He seems reliable.

Alfaro slammed his helmet in the dugout after striking out, up 7-0 in the 8th. He takes things seriously.

Funny moment as Elias Diaz comes to bat pinch-hitting with stats of something like .480 / .575 / .720 and Tom McCarthy seems to have never heard of him and just says "I would say......... in limited playing time, he has been hitting well". Guess you had to have been there.
   67. Jay Seaver Posted: April 19, 2018 at 11:26 PM (#5656908)
Yay! : Double by J.D. Martinez
Boo! : That chin guard keeps Hanley's helmet from flying off like it should.
   68. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: April 19, 2018 at 11:41 PM (#5656914)
Cesar Hernandez had a bases clearing single, thanks to a 3-2 count with 2 outs and J. P. crawford busting it from first.
   69. Dale Sams Posted: April 19, 2018 at 11:43 PM (#5656915)

And the replacement is adding a foot to the left side of the plate.

Mookie grounds into the DP. The world has stopped spinning as a disruption in the time/space continuum has been detected.

Benintendi homer. Normalcy somewhat restored.
   72. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 20, 2018 at 01:35 AM (#5656934)
Red Sox just getting cocky now. Are so confident they brought in Joe Kelly to finish it off and "hold" the 6 run lead.
   73. Dale Sams Posted: April 20, 2018 at 01:45 AM (#5656936)
Sox are gonna need to find a new role for Kimbrel at this rate
   74. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: April 20, 2018 at 09:19 AM (#5656973)

As soon as Layne left the game I texted a friend "the boys better be swinging, anytime this happens the new ump has a rough night."
