Athletics designate Kendrys Morales for assignment

The Oakland Athletics designated Kendrys Morales for assignment this morning.

Morales, 35, was batting just .204/.310/.259 with one home run through 126 plate appearances this season. He’ll now go on waivers and, in all likelihood, will clear them, be released, and become a free agent. There could be a team or two interested in a look as he hit.249/.331/.438 with 21 home runs and 57 RBI in 471 plate appearances last season, but this could be the end of the line for him.

Today’s entry in “Players You Weren’t Sure Were Still Playing, But Aren’t At All Surprised By What Team They’re Members Of”.

Maybe someone picks him up as a pitcher. A 4.50 ERA isn't too bad in today's juiced ball era. If he were a lefty I'd like his chances better.

It's shocking that Billy Butler Part 2 didn't work out any better than the original.

To be fair, Morales was picked up right after Olson went down with injury and was released as soon as Canha came off the IL. He was always intended to be an injury stopgap. The DFA has less to do with his putrid performance than it does roster-ology.

I'm wondering if by Butler part 2 SoSH U is referring to the decision to sign an ex-Royals DH for 3 years and a bit over 30 million, as opposed to the A's picking the player up. Oakland paid only a small part of Morales' 2019 salary.

Neither signing looks good, but Morales comes out on top. He hit 49 homers and provided positive (barely, but in the right direction) WAR for the first 2 years of the contract.

Butler was a negative WAR player in year one, got himself released in year 2 (flat zero WAR for both OAK and NYA), and sat at home collecting his paycheck for year 3.

Definite win for Kendrys. Plus he made two appearances on the mound, that has to count for something.

Just bringing in a former Royals DH who clearly couldn't hit any longer. Obviously, this one wasn't as costly.

The A's got the better part of Jeremy Giambi after the Royals. So, they've got that going for them - which is nice.

The A's were also the first to give Mike Sweeney a try after his Royals' career -- average in 42 games, signed as a FA but I assume for just 1 year and cheap.

Well, now he's a Yankee.

A proactive move in anticipation of even more injuries? Apparently just a cash deal, so no great loss, unless Morales ends up actually playing a lot. Seems like a big ask for The Magic of Pinstripes™️.

Morales replaces Loaisiga on the roster. Seems to me that he's being acquired to provide occasional backup for Voit until Bird returns, along with pinch hitting. His switch hitting does give the Yanks a bit more flexibility in that role.

Any help is help. With Urshela playing well, Andujar had settled into the DH role...with him out Morales has a shot at some decent playing time if he can hit even a little it - at least until Stanton and Judge make it back (if they're the next two) - since there isn't a clear DH guy left. Probably would just rotate through Sanchez, Frazier, and Voit depending on which of the backups is swinging the best bat if he can't turn it around quickly. It was probably something like this or bring Tauchman or Wade back up...worth taking a gamble to see if Morales can outhit either of them over the next 2-3 weeks.

I think it's past time to write off Bird. It's been 4 years since he hit, and he's made of glass.

The "made of glass" part is what's relevant. When Bird's fully healthy, he's put up very good numbers. The question is whether he can ever remain fully healthy.
   14. catomi01 Posted: May 15, 2019 at 10:10 AM (#5842225)
If Bird was healthy tomorrow, or at any point in the next few weeks,he gets another shot by default (for the same reason Morales is getting one now - they need enough players to fill out a 25 man roster.) But unless he gets healthy, stays healthy, and goes on a tear for the rest of the season...then he's lumped in the same group as Mike Ford and other Quad-A type guys...expendable until proven otherwise.

And the Billy Butler comparison gets stronger.

Why not Mike Ford for that?

Double post.

When? 2015?

Even including the post-season, 2017 was ~100 OPS+, 2018 was an 80 OPS+.

If he's only been "fully healthy" for 250 of his 700 PA, that answers the question doesn't it?

I think this Bird has flown the coop.

(I'll show myself out)
