McCann capped a stunning comeback with a replay-assisted homer that gave Atlanta a 7-6 victory over the Marlins on Sunday — the first time a game ended on a call using video.
...
“I heard it hit the back tin (wall), so I knew that wasn’t the sound of the pads,” McCann said. “I knew it was a homer. I was telling Tim McClelland, ‘I promise you it’s a homer, I heard it hit the back.’”
Pinch-hitter Matt Diaz tied the game with a two-run homer off Leo Nunez (4-3) after Brooks Conrad led off the ninth with a walk. Nunez retired the next two hitters, then McCann drove a 1-2 pitch toward the wall in right.
The ball bounced back onto the field, and the umpires initially ruled it was still in play. McCann stopped at second and began arguing that he should have more than a double.
...
The NL East-leading Braves overcame a 6-1 deficit, scoring three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth for a victory they will surely remember if they hold on for their first division title since 2005.

It's hard to have a home run controversy in Turner Field; the outfield walls are set several feet in front of the back wall that McCann hit. You have to hit the ball pretty damn hard to cause the kind of ricochet needed for any kind of issue.
I did get a kick out of this:
Oh, well, if you promise, then I believe you.
The play was miscalled originally because the 1B/RF ump was a rookie who had never called a game @ Turner Field. So he's not familiar with the "if it rings, it hit metal and is a homerun" rule of thumb. And the ball was a low, screaming line drive (that I would have swore was never getting over the fence.) It skimmed the wall, bounced off of a support strut (between the inner wall and the outer wall) then off of the back wall, then bouncing back onto the field of play.
When McCann turned to McLelland (who was calling 2B) to argue, it was pretty clear that McLelland knew it as a HR and just had to go through the official motions of reviewing the tape. He immediately threw up the "hold up, it will be okay, we'll take a look and get it right" hands to calm McCann down at second.
OK--someone make up a Johnny Cochran rhyme
"If there's no thud, it's not a dud."
"Dude, watch the damned ball. It's not that hard. Dumbass."
That last one needs work.
I like that one the best
"And if your face looks glum, you get the thumb."
"If you squall, I'll blow the call."
No. It wouldn't surprise me if McCann eventually accumulates more career value - no way to predict, but McCann is very good and if he plays significantly longer or if Mauer moves to DH full time in the next year or so or something, it could happen. But just in terms of peak ability, no.
Whatever, nice miracle win today to holdoff the Phils for another day.
No kidding. I've never really been sold on this team. I mean, I like them a great deal. I've just never been convinced they could win. When Chipper went down, I was convinced they'd collapse. It's probably mere sentimentality, but it seems like Cox must be doing something magical.
I'm quickly becoming a convert to instant replay.
Weaknesses: The defense is ordinary to below-average, and there's no real lineup anchor. It could be Heyward next year, but he's basically lost his power since his pre-All Star break wrist injury.
1st Half - 251/.366/.455,
2nd half 308/.417/.479
He's been great since coming back. Fewer HR/PA, but more 2B/PA and 4HRs in August after 0 in July bode well for the rest of the way. And he is not missing pitches at all right now.
